Why one family carries three spellings, and why it matters now
Kokborok was written in Bengali script and later in Roman script, and neither fixed how a clan name should look in English. The clerk who enrolled your father's voter ID in the 1990s wrote what he heard. The school that admitted you wrote what your father said. The Aadhaar operator in 2012 typed what the form showed. Each was reasonable. None consulted the other. For years nothing happened, because nobody compared.
Now everything compares. PAN is matched to Aadhaar by machine. Banks run KYC against both. Passport Seva reads your Class 10 certificate as age proof and your Aadhaar as address proof and stops when the surnames differ. Ten years from now, when a land record or an old degree surfaces with "Deb Barma", this page is what the office reads.

If the father is Debbarma and the daughter is corrected to Deb Barma because that is what her Class 10 says, the father's Aadhaar and her PRTC now disagree with each other at every scholarship, every inheritance and every passport for a minor. Debbarma and Deb Barma are both real, both correct in their own way, and both sitting in different drawers of the same household. A verifying officer does not see two spellings of one name; he sees two strings that do not match. - Affidavit
- A written statement you swear is true before a notary. For a name change it records your old name, your new name, your parent's or husband's name, your address and the reason.
- Notary public
- A person authorised by the Government to witness signatures and certify documents. Notarisation is done in person in Tripura and is the one step that cannot be completed online.
- Newspaper notice

- Correction against change
- A correction brings a record into line with what was already written elsewhere. A change records a name nobody has recorded before. The two need different documents and different wording.

- The Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in, the only accepted channel for the Central Gazette fee.
