Gazette Name Change in Tripura
Your Gazette notification is the one document that Aadhaar, PAN, Passport Seva Kendra Agartala, your bank and your employer all accept as proof of your new name. This page shows you exactly how you get it from Tripura: which Gazette, what goes in the file, where it is filed, what you pay, how long you wait, and how you download the PDF for free.
For a Gazette name change in Tripura, you use the Central Gazette, the Gazette of India. You sign a notarised affidavit, publish the change in one Bengali and one English daily, and send the file to the Department of Publication in Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, with the fee paid on BharatKosh, commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. Your notice appears in Part IV in 30 to 45 days and you download the PDF free from egazette.gov.in.
If you have searched for a Gazette name change in Tripura, you have probably already hit the confusing part. Some websites talk about a "Tripura Gazette". Some show a "gazette office in Agartala". Some quote Rs 999 for the whole thing. None of that matches what actually happens when a Tripura resident changes their name.
Here is the plain version. A Gazette notification is your name change printed in the official journal of the Government, with a page number and a date. For you in Tripura, that journal is almost always the Gazette of India, published from Delhi. The Tripura Gazette exists, but it carries Government orders, and it has no clear published route for a private person to announce a new name. So your file goes to Delhi, and this page walks you through every step of that journey without you leaving Agartala, Udaipur, Dharmanagar or wherever you are in the state.

Key takeaways
- Your Gazette name change from Tripura goes to the Central Gazette in Delhi. That is the route that works and is accepted everywhere in India.
- There is no Central Gazette counter in Agartala. Any website showing one is showing a Delhi address with a Tripura label.
- The Gazette comes third. Your affidavit and your two newspaper notices come first, and the Gazette office checks all three against each other.
- The fee is non-refundable, so the spelling of your new name is locked in writing before anything prints.
- Once published, your notice never expires and the PDF costs nothing to download, today or ten years from now.
- The Gazette proves the change. It does not update Aadhaar, PAN or your passport by itself. You do those next, in order.
Central Gazette or Tripura Gazette: which one is yours?
You get this one right and everything after it is simple. You get it wrong and you pay twice.
India has two kinds of Gazette. The Central Gazette is the Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication in Delhi. Personal name change notices from anywhere in India are printed in its Part IV. The Tripura Gazette is published weekly by the Tripura Government Press in Agartala, under the General Administration (Printing and Stationery) Department, and it carries orders and notifications from Government departments.
For you, the test is simple: is there a published way for a private person in Tripura to file a name change notice in the Tripura Gazette? There is no clear one. So for your case, the Central Gazette is the route that is open, and it is also the route that Passport Seva Kendra Agartala, banks with branches across India and every office outside Tripura accept without questions.
| What you want to know | Central Gazette | Tripura Gazette |
|---|---|---|
| Can you file a personal name change? | Yes, from anywhere in Tripura | No clear published route. Ask the Press before paying anything |

Your Gazette name change from Tripura, step by step
Six steps. You do the first one in person. Everything else can happen while you go about your week.
Sign the affidavit
On non-judicial stamp paper, stating your old name, your new name, your address in Tripura, your father's or husband's name and the reason. You sign before a notary in Agartala or your district town, with a witness. This is the only step that cannot happen online.
Publish two newspaper notices
One Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, identical wording. You keep the complete original page of each, with the masthead and the date. A cutting is rejected.
Prepare the Gazette file
The prescribed form in two copies, an undertaking, a request letter to the Controller of Publications, a soft copy of the notice, self-attested ID of you and your witness, two photographs, and both newspaper pages.
Pay on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid only on bharatkosh.gov.in. You keep the e-receipt for the file. No demand draft, no cash, no CD.
File in Delhi
The file goes to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, in your own name. You never travel: our Delhi head office delivers it and brings back the acknowledgement.
Download your Gazette
In 30 to 45 days your notice is printed in Part IV. You search egazette.gov.in by name and download the PDF free. That PDF is your legal proof everywhere.
What goes in your Gazette name change file from Tripura
Every item, and the mistake people make with each one.
| Item | What it is | Where Tripura files go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Prescribed form, two copies | The Department of Publication's change of name proforma, typed | Handwritten, or the old and new name typed in different spellings |
| Undertaking | Your signed statement that the details are true | Unsigned, or signed in the new name (you sign in the old name) |
| Request letter | Addressed to the Controller of Publications, asking for publication | Missing, or addressed to a "Gazette office, Agartala" that does not exist |
| Soft copy of the notice | The exact text of your notice as a digital file | Text differs from the printed form by a letter or a space |
| Original newspaper pages | Complete page from the Bengali daily and the English daily | A cutting, only one paper, or two papers in the same language |
| Notarised affidavit | Original, on stamp paper | Older than the notice, or with a Bengali name in a third spelling |
| Self-attested IDs | Your ID and your witness's ID, each signed by its owner | Witness ID missing or not self-attested |
| Photographs | Two recent passport size | Old photographs, or not passport size |
| BharatKosh receipt | The e-receipt for the Government fee | Paid under the wrong head, or a bank transfer instead of BharatKosh |
Where your Gazette name change file from Tripura is actually filed
There is exactly one Central Gazette office in India, and it is not in Tripura. It is the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054. Every personal name change notice in the Gazette of India, from every state, is submitted there.
You have three ways to get your file there from Tripura. You can travel to Delhi yourself, which is a long trip for a counter visit. You can post the originals, which means trusting your only newspaper pages and your notarised affidavit to the post. Or you can use a desk with a Delhi office, which is why we keep one: your documents are checked at Capital Complex in Agartala, then carried to our Delhi head office at Metro Pillar 337, Hardev Nagar, Street 1, Delhi 110084, and delivered at the counter in your own name, as the Department's guidelines require. Directions, phone numbers and the wrong addresses to avoid are on Gazette office address for name change from Tripura.
The Gazette proforma and how your Tripura name appears in it
The heart of the file is a short typed declaration in the Department of Publication's format. The wording most people know is "I, [old name], son of / daughter of / wife of [name], residing at [address], have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as [new name]." Your Agartala or district address goes in exactly as it appears on your address proof.
For Tripura names, the spelling is where files live or die. Bengali and Kokborok names have more than one accepted English spelling: Debbarma or Deb Barma, Reang or Riang, Chakma or Chakmaa, Bhattacharjee or Bhattacharya. The Gazette prints whatever your form says, and then every office in Tripura will match your Aadhaar and PAN against that printed spelling. So you decide one spelling, in writing, before the affidavit is typed, and the same spelling goes on the newspaper notice, the form, the undertaking and the soft copy.
Gazette name change fees in Tripura: what you pay and to whom
The Government fee is one number. Everything else is separate, and we show it that way.
| What | Typical amount | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Central Gazette fee, adult | Commonly Rs 1,100 | Government of India, on BharatKosh. Revised each financial year, confirm on the day of filing |
| Central Gazette fee, minor | Commonly Rs 1,700 | Government of India, on BharatKosh |
| Applying from outside India | Around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000 | Government of India, on BharatKosh |
| Stamp paper and notary in Tripura | Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Stamp vendor and notary |
| Two newspaper notices | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 | The two newspapers. English dailies usually cost more |
| Our service charge | Quoted per case | Tripura Name Change, always a separate line |
A "gazette at Rs 999" cannot be a Central Gazette, because the Government fee alone is more than that. It is either an affidavit sold as a Gazette, or a State Gazette in a state you do not live in. Two questions settle it: which Gazette, and does the price include the Government fee? The screen-by-screen payment is on BharatKosh fee payment for Gazette name change, and package pricing for the full job is on our services page.
How long a Gazette name change takes from Tripura
Real timings for a file that starts in Agartala and ends in Part IV.
Day 1 to 2
Spelling confirmed in writing, affidavit typed and notarised in your district.
Day 3 to 7
Notice printed in one Bengali daily and one English daily, original pages collected.
Day 7 to 12
File assembled, BharatKosh paid, carried to Delhi and submitted at Civil Lines.
Day 30 to 45 after filing
Your notice appears in Part IV. You download the PDF and start your record updates.
So you should plan for 3 to 7 weeks from the day you confirm the spelling to the day you hold the PDF. Anyone promising a Gazette in 7 days is describing an affidavit. The Gazette of India is published on a weekly cycle and the Department processes files in the order they arrive.
How you track and download your Gazette name change from Tripura
No competitor in Tripura tells you this part. It is the part you will use for the rest of your life.
Tracking
After filing you have an acknowledgement. From about the fourth week, you check egazette.gov.in. Go to the search for Part IV notices, put in your new name or old name, and look at the weekly issues. When your notice appears, the search result shows the Gazette number, the date and the page. We check for you every week and send you the PDF the day it appears.
Downloading
The Gazette of India has been digital only since October 2015. The PDF you download from egazette.gov.in is the official copy. It needs no stamp, no attestation and no "certified copy" from anyone. Save it in two places, print one copy for your folder, and note the Gazette number and date. If you lose the file years later, you search the portal and download it again, free.
Why Gazette name change files from Tripura get returned
Every item here costs you the fee again and another 30 to 45 days.
Spelling and wording
- Affidavit says Debbarma, newspaper says Deb Barma
- Initials with a dot in one place and without in another
- Old name in the form does not match your ID exactly
- You or a witness signed in the new name
Paper and payment
- Newspaper cutting instead of the complete page
- Only one paper, or both papers in Bengali
- Fee paid by bank transfer instead of BharatKosh
- Witness ID missing, photographs old or wrong size
If a file is returned for an error that was the Department's, you write to the Department of Publication with your acknowledgement and your submitted form. If the error was in your file, a fresh notice and a fresh fee are the only way through. Checking the file before it leaves Agartala is cheaper than either. All fourteen reasons, with the fix for each, the honest timeline and the fee split are on Gazette name change time, fees and rejection reasons in Tripura.
What you do after your Gazette name change is published
The Gazette is proof. It rewrites nothing on its own. You now update each record, in this order.
| Order | Record | Why now |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar | Everything else checks against it. Aadhaar Seva Kendra in your district, with the Gazette, affidavit and newspaper pages |
| 2 | PAN | Correction request with the Gazette; your PAN number stays the same |
| 3 | Bank | Branch visit once Aadhaar and PAN agree with each other |
| 4 | Passport | Re-issue with change of name at Passport Seva Kendra Agartala. The Gazette is the accepted proof |
| 5 | Voter ID, driving licence | Simple once Aadhaar carries the new name |
| 6 | EPFO, insurance, school and board records, land | Each has its own form; TBSE and the university run their own correction process |
Each of these has its own page on this site as the cluster is built out. Until then, the full order with details is on the homepage guide.
When you do not need a Gazette name change at all
Birth certificate error
A spelling or parent's name mistake in your Tripura birth certificate is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the RBD Act, 1969, at Agartala Municipal Corporation, your Nagar Panchayat or your Gram Panchayat. A Gazette will not touch the birth register.
Date of birth
A Gazette never changes a date of birth. That goes through TBSE for a mark sheet, the Registrar for a birth certificate, or a court order.
Surname in Aadhaar after marriage
If all you want is your husband's surname added in Aadhaar, the marriage certificate alone is often accepted. Check that free route first. You need the Gazette when a passport, PAN or bank is involved.
If your case is one of these, we tell you on the first call and point you to the right office. We would rather you spend nothing than pay for a Gazette you do not need.
Gazette words used on this page, explained
Words you will meet at a counter, in one place.

- Proforma
- The typed page that becomes your Gazette notice. It is filed in two identical copies, signed in your existing old name, and witnessed by two people.

- Request letter
- The covering letter addressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, stating that the formalities are complete and the documents are enclosed.

- Newspaper notice

The file goes to Delhi whichever district you live in. Your part is the affidavit in your own town and scans on WhatsApp.
In Agartala you can walk in at Capital Complex and have the affidavit notarised the same day. From any other town, a notary in your district and a WhatsApp scan is all it takes.

Gazette name change in Tripura, the questions people search
Is there a Gazette office in Agartala?
No. The only Central Gazette office is the Department of Publication in Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. The Tripura Government Press in Agartala prints the Tripura Gazette, which is a Government record, not a counter for personal name changes.
Can I apply for a Gazette name change online from Tripura?
Partly. The fee is paid online on BharatKosh, tracking is online, and the download is online. The affidavit is notarised in person in Tripura, the newspaper pages are physical, and the file is submitted on paper in Delhi.
Is a Gazette from Delhi valid in Tripura?
Yes, everywhere in Tripura and everywhere in India. The Gazette of India is the Central Government's own journal. Aadhaar centres in Agartala, PAN, banks and Passport Seva Kendra Agartala all accept it.
Does the Gazette notification expire?
No. A published notice stays in the Gazette record permanently. You can download the same PDF from egazette.gov.in years later.
Can I change my name twice through the Gazette?
Yes. There is no legal limit. Each change is a fresh notice and a fresh fee. Keep every Gazette you have ever been issued, because passport and background checks ask for the chain.
What is Part IV?
Part IV is the section of the Gazette of India for notices that come from private persons rather than from the Government. Personal name changes are printed there. It belongs to the Central Gazette only; the Tripura Gazette has its own parts.
Which newspapers in Tripura are accepted?
Any Bengali daily and any English daily that actually circulate in Tripura, with identical wording. The Gazette office checks the masthead and date on the complete page, not the brand of the paper.
Where do I read each step in detail?
Each part of the Gazette route has its own guide: Central Gazette vs Tripura State Gazette, documents required, the Gazette office address, the proforma format, BharatKosh fee payment, checking status and downloading the copy, and time, fees and rejection reasons.
