Adding a surname to a single name in Tripura
Single names are common across Tripura's communities and in Bengali families too: a child registered as "Sumita" or "Bikash", a school that never asked for a surname, an Aadhaar enrolment that copied the school. It is a name change

It is not a correction
The birth certificate recorded the name that was given. The Registrar under the RBD Act corrects errors, and a single name is not an error. Asking the Agartala Municipal Corporation or a Village Committee to "add a surname" gets a refusal; the birth certificate is updated after the Gazette, as a consequence of it.
It needs no reason
You may add your father's, mother's or spouse's surname, your clan name, or any surname you choose. The affidavit states the new name; it need not justify it, though borrowing a parent's surname is the easiest to attest.
Where the new surname's spelling comes from
A surname you add has no history on your own records, so its spelling has to be borrowed from somewhere, and that somewhere is what every office will later compare against. Removing a surname in Tripura
People drop a surname for many reasons: it is a caste marker they do not want, it was a step-father's, it was written by a clerk and never used, it is a community name they no longer identify with. All are allowed, none needs a reason on paper, and all are name changes: "Rina Debbarma" to "Rina" is declared the same way as any other. The affidavit says "by removing the surname Debbarma"; the newspapers and proforma carry the full old name and the new single name. A caste or ST certificate is untouched, because community status follows birth, not surname.

The commonest time to add a surname is before a child's Class 10 registration or first passport, and the commonest source is the father's or mother's Aadhaar.
