Name Change Service in Tripura
One legal name change, done properly the first time. We prepare the affidavit in Agartala, place the Bengali and English newspaper notices, file the Gazette notification through our Delhi head office and hand you the published PDF. Anywhere in Tripura, without you standing in a single queue.
A legal name change in Tripura takes three steps: a notarised affidavit, a notice in one Bengali and one English newspaper circulating in Tripura, and a Gazette notification. Most Tripura applicants use the Central Gazette of India. The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, and publication usually takes 30 to 45 days. An affidavit alone is not enough.
Most people looking for a name change service in Tripura have already tried once on their own. They made an affidavit at the Agartala court, took it to the bank or to the Aadhaar centre, and were told it is not proof. That is the single most common wasted trip in this whole process, and it happens because the affidavit is the beginning of the change, not the end of it.
A Gazette notification is a formal announcement of your name change printed in the official journal of the Government. For Tripura residents this is almost always the Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication in Delhi, because the Tripura Gazette mainly carries Government notifications. Once your notice is printed with a page number and a date, it becomes the document that Aadhaar, PAN, Passport Seva Kendra Agartala, banks, schools and employers accept as the legal record of your new name.

Key takeaways
- The affidavit, the newspaper notice and the Gazette are three separate steps. Skipping any one of them causes a rejection later.
- The Central Gazette is accepted everywhere in India, including every office in Tripura. It is the route most Tripura residents actually use.
- There is exactly one Central Gazette office and it is in Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. There is no Central Gazette counter in Agartala.
- The Gazette fee is non-refundable, so an error in the spelling costs you the full fee again.
- A spelling mistake in a Tripura birth certificate is a Registrar correction at the municipal body, not a Gazette job.
- Update Aadhaar first after publication, then PAN, then bank, then passport. The order matters.
Tripura Gazette or Central Gazette, which one do you need?
This is the first real decision, and picking wrong is expensive because the fee is non-refundable.
India runs two parallel routes for a name change notification. The Central Gazette is the Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Personal name change notices appear in Part IV. The Tripura Gazette is published weekly by the Tripura Government Press in Agartala, under the General Administration (Printing and Stationery) Department, and it mainly carries orders and notifications from Government departments, the High Court and the Election Commission.
The practical test for a Tripura resident is simple. The Tripura Gazette does not publish a clear personal name change route the way Maharashtra or Bihar do, so for most people in Agartala, Udaipur, Dharmanagar or any other town, the Central Gazette is the route that is actually open. It is also the one accepted by Passport Seva Kendra Agartala, by banks with branches across the country, by central Government employers and by any office outside Tripura.
| Point of comparison | Central Gazette of India | Tripura Gazette |
|---|---|---|
| Published by | Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054 | Tripura Government Press, Agartala |
| Where it appears | Part IV of the Gazette of India | Weekly issue in ten parts, mostly Government orders and notifications |
| Accepted | Everywhere in India and by foreign missions | Within Tripura, for the Government matters it publishes |
| Personal name change | Open to every resident of Tripura | No clear published route for private applicants, confirm with the Press first |
| Government fee | Commonly Rs 1,100 adult and Rs 1,700 minor, revised each financial year | Not published for personal notices |
| Payment | BharatKosh, the Non-Tax Receipt Portal | State treasury challan, where a notice is accepted |
| Publication time | Commonly 30 to 45 days | Weekly issue, but acceptance of a private notice is the real question |
| Download | Free from egazette.gov.in | From egazette.tripura.gov.in |
| Best for | Passport, visa, central jobs, banking, anything national or outside Tripura | Tripura State Government service records, where the department asks for it |
The three legal steps to change your name in Tripura
Every genuine name change in Tripura follows this order. Nobody can skip a step for you.
The affidavit
An affidavit is prepared on non-judicial stamp paper stating your old name, your new name, your address in Tripura, your father's or husband's name and the reason for the change. You sign it before a notary public in Agartala or your district town, with a witness. This is a sworn statement, so the spelling here must match exactly what you want printed in the Gazette.
The newspaper notice
The change is published in two newspapers, one Bengali daily and one English daily, both circulating in Tripura. Keep the complete original printed page including the masthead and the date. A cutting is not accepted, because the Gazette office checks the page header.
The Gazette notification
The complete file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi for the Central Gazette. The fee is paid through BharatKosh. Once printed, you download the PDF from egazette.gov.in, and that PDF is your legal proof in every office in Tripura and outside it.
Step 1 in detail: getting the affidavit right
The affidavit is short, but it is the document that everything else copies from. If your new name is spelt Debbarma in the affidavit and Deb Barma in the newspaper, the Gazette office will return the file. Tripura names, in Bengali or in Kokborok, often have more than one accepted English spelling, so we type the affidavit, read it back to you letter by letter before printing, and only then arrange notarisation. For a minor, both parents sign. For a name change after marriage, the affidavit mentions the maiden name, the married name and the date of marriage.
Step 2 in detail: the newspaper notice in Tripura
Two papers, two languages, same wording. In Tripura this usually means one Bengali daily published from Agartala and one English daily circulating in the state. The notice carries your old name, your new name, your address and the affidavit date. Publication charges depend on the paper, and this is usually the most variable cost in the whole process. We book the space, check the proof before it prints, and collect the original full pages for your file.
Step 3 in detail: filing the Gazette
The Central Gazette file needs the original newspaper page, an undertaking, two copies of the prescribed form, a soft copy of the notice text, self-attested ID proof for you and for your witness, two passport size photographs and a request letter addressed to the Controller of Publications. The fee is paid only through BharatKosh, since direct bank transfers were discontinued. Personal name change notices are printed in Part IV of the Gazette of India, and once printed the PDF is downloadable free from egazette.gov.in. The full file list is on documents required for Gazette name change, the wording on the proforma format, and the payment on BharatKosh fee payment.
Documents you need for a name change in Tripura
Send clear scans. Photographs of documents taken at an angle are the second most common reason for delay.
For an adult applicant
- Photo ID in the old name: Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID or Passport
- Address proof in Tripura, which can be the same Aadhaar
- Two recent passport size photographs
- Self-attested photocopy of one witness ID proof
- Marriage certificate, if the change is a surname change after marriage
- Divorce decree, if you are reverting to a maiden name
- The notarised affidavit and both original newspaper pages
For a minor under 18
- The child's birth certificate, from the municipal body or panchayat that issued it
- School record or bonafide certificate, where available
- Aadhaar of the child, if issued
- Photo ID and address proof of both parents or the legal guardian
- Two passport size photographs of the child
- Affidavit signed by both parents or by the guardian
- Guardianship or custody order, where only one parent applies
Name change fees in Tripura, explained honestly
Government fees and market costs are different things. Here is both, separated.
| Item | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Central Gazette fee, adult | Rs 1,100 | Paid through BharatKosh. The Department of Publication states the fee is revised each financial year, so confirm it on the day you file. |
| Central Gazette fee, minor | Rs 1,700 | Applies to anyone under 18. Also paid through BharatKosh. |
| Stamp paper and notary in Tripura | Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Stamp paper value differs by state. |
| Newspaper notice, two papers | Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 | The widest variable. English dailies usually cost more than the Bengali dailies. |
| Applying from abroad | Around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000 | Higher rate for applicants outside India. |
| Realistic self-done total | Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 | Everything above added together, excluding the trip to Delhi and repeat trips. |
| Tripura Name Change assistance | Quoted per case | Charged separately from Government fees. Call 9540005026 for a fixed quote before you commit. |
Be careful with advertisements offering a "gazette name change at Rs 999". The Central Gazette Government fee alone is more than that, so a price below the Government fee means either a State Gazette in a state you do not live in, or an affidavit dressed up as a Gazette. Ask any provider two questions: which Gazette, and does the price include the Government fee. The honest timeline and every rejection reason are on Gazette name change time, fees and rejection reasons.
How long does a name change take in Tripura?
Realistic timings, not the best case that nobody actually gets.
Day 1 to 2
Documents collected in Agartala or on WhatsApp, affidavit drafted, spelling confirmed with you in writing, notarisation arranged.
Day 3 to 7
Notice booked in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura. Original full pages collected.
Day 7 to 12
Gazette file assembled, fee paid through BharatKosh, application submitted at the Delhi counter by our head office and acknowledged.
Day 30 to 45
Notification printed. We download the PDF from the e-Gazette portal and send it to you with the update checklist.
Total for the Central route is commonly 3 to 7 weeks end to end. Allow a few extra days for the file to reach Delhi from Agartala. Anyone promising a Central Gazette in 3 days is describing an affidavit, not a Gazette.

Which gazette route is open to you in Tripura?
People in Tripura are often quoted routes that belong to other states. This is what is actually open to a Tripura resident.
| Route | Publishing body or portal | Practical note for Tripura |
|---|---|---|
| Central Gazette of India | Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, egazette.gov.in | Open to every resident of Tripura and accepted everywhere. The route we file for almost every case. |
| Tripura Gazette | Tripura Government Press, Agartala, egazette.tripura.gov.in | Weekly issue carrying Government orders and notifications. No clear published route for a private name change. Ask the Press before paying a state fee. |
| Assam Gazette | Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Assam, dpns.assam.gov.in | For Assam residents only. A Tripura address does not qualify, whatever an agent in Guwahati says. |
| West Bengal Gazette, Part II | wbgazettepart2.in | For West Bengal residents only. Bengali speaking Tripura residents are sometimes wrongly sold this route. |
| Tripura State Government employees | Your department's establishment section, then the Tripura Gazette where the department asks for it | Ask your establishment section which Gazette they accept on the service book before you spend anything. |
Key terms explained for Tripura applicants
The words that appear on every name change website, in language people actually use.
- Gazette notification
- A formal announcement printed in the official journal of the Government. For a name change it is the document that Aadhaar, PAN, passport offices, banks and employers accept as legal proof.
- Central Gazette
- The Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication in Civil Lines, Delhi. It is accepted everywhere in India, including every office in Tripura, and by foreign missions.
- Tripura Gazette
- The weekly gazette published by the Tripura Government Press in Agartala. It is a separate publication from the Gazette of India and mainly carries Government orders and notifications.
- Part IV
- The section of the Gazette of India that carries notices from people rather than from the Government. Personal name change notifications appear here. Part IV belongs to the Central Gazette only.
- Affidavit
- A written statement you swear is true, signed before a notary public. For a name change it records your old name, your new name, your address and the reason for the change.
- Notary public
- A person authorised by the Government to witness signatures and certify documents. Notarisation is done in person in Tripura, which is the one step that cannot be completed online.
- Non-judicial stamp paper
- Government stamped paper used for affidavits and agreements. The value required in Tripura is small.
- BharatKosh
- The Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in. It is the only accepted channel for the Central Gazette fee, since direct bank transfers were discontinued.
- e-Gazette
- The portal at egazette.gov.in where published notifications are searched and downloaded. The Gazette of India has been digital only since October 2015, so the PDF is the official copy.
- Registrar correction
- A correction to a birth or death record under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, made by the body that issued the certificate, such as Agartala Municipal Corporation or a Gram Panchayat. It is not a Gazette matter.
- Deed of change of name
- A formal deed used mainly by Government employees, alongside the departmental route set out in the Ministry of Home Affairs Office Memorandum, so the service book is updated.
- Self-attestation
- Signing your own photocopy to confirm it matches the original. Gazette files ask for self-attested copies of your ID and your witness's ID.
Update your records in Tripura in this order
Doing this in the wrong order is what turns a four week job into a four month one.
| Order | Record | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar | Almost every other service verifies against Aadhaar. Update it first at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in Agartala or your district with the Gazette, affidavit and newspaper pages. |
| 2 | PAN card | The PAN correction form asks for proof, and an updated Aadhaar makes this straightforward. |
| 3 | Bank accounts | Banks check the PAN and Aadhaar pair. Updating the bank before both are done causes a mismatch. |
| 4 | Passport | Re-issue with a change of name at Passport Seva Kendra Agartala. The Gazette is the accepted proof, and Passport Seva also checks the newspaper notice in many cases. |
| 5 | Voter ID and driving licence | Straightforward once Aadhaar carries the new name. |
| 6 | EPFO, UAN and insurance | Employer-linked records. Your HR department usually needs the Gazette on file first. |
| 7 | School, board and university records | Slowest of the lot. TBSE, CBSE and Tripura University each have their own correction form and fee. |
| 8 | Land, GST and business records | Handle last, once the identity documents all agree with each other. |
A Tripura birth certificate mistake is not a Gazette job
This is the single most common thing people are sold wrongly. If your birth certificate has a spelling mistake, a wrong parent's name or a wrong date, that is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. You apply to the registrar or body that issued the certificate, which in Tripura means Agartala Municipal Corporation, your Nagar Panchayat, your Village Committee or your Gram Panchayat depending on where you were born.
A Gazette notification will not fix the entry in the birth register. The two documents live in different systems. If someone quotes you a Gazette price to correct a birth certificate, they are either confused or selling you something you do not need. Where a case genuinely needs both, which happens when you want a new name going forward and a corrected record going backward, we tell you that clearly and quote both separately.
Marriage, divorce and children in Tripura
Surname change after marriage
The marriage certificate does not change your name by itself. You still need the affidavit, the newspaper notice and the Gazette. The affidavit names the maiden name, the married name and the date of marriage, and the marriage certificate is attached as supporting proof. Many women in Tripura choose the Central route because a passport re-issue at PSK Agartala is usually next on the list.
Reverting after divorce
Going back to a maiden name follows the same three steps, with the decree of divorce attached. The affidavit states that you are resuming your name before marriage. Courts do not do this for you, and the decree alone is not accepted by banks or PAN as a name change proof. The full route, the old-spelling rule and the children's surname question are on name change after divorce in Tripura.
Changing a child's name
For anyone under 18, both parents or the legal guardian apply on the child's behalf, and the minor fee applies. The birth certificate and the school record are usually needed. Where only one parent signs, a custody or guardianship order is required, and we will tell you upfront if your case needs one. The full child route is on minor name change in Tripura.
If you are a Government employee in Tripura
Your process has an extra layer. Central Government employees follow the route set out in the Ministry of Home Affairs Office Memorandum No. 190016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987, which requires a deed of change of name, publication, and an application through your own department so that the service book is updated. Tripura State Government employees usually route the change through their own establishment section, which may ask for a notification in the Tripura Gazette through the department.
Do one thing before you spend any money: ask your establishment or administration section which Gazette they will accept on the service record. Departments differ, and a Gazette in the wrong series means paying twice. We prepare the file to match whatever your department confirms.
Armed forces, Assam Rifles, TSR, police and railway personnel usually have a service-specific procedure that sits alongside the Gazette. Bring us the circular your unit gives you and we will build the file around it.
Why name change applications from Tripura get rejected
Every one of these is avoidable, and every one of them costs the fee again.
Document problems
- Spelling differs between the affidavit, the newspaper and the form, common with Bengali and Kokborok names
- A newspaper cutting sent instead of the complete original page
- Only one newspaper, or two papers in the same language
- ID proof that is blurred, cropped or photographed at an angle
- Witness ID missing or not self-attested
- Photographs that are not passport size or not recent
Process problems
- Stopping at the affidavit and assuming the change is done
- Paying outside BharatKosh, since direct transfers were discontinued
- Sending originals by ordinary post to an address copied from an unofficial website
- Paying for an Assam or West Bengal state gazette with a Tripura address
- Only one parent signing for a minor without a custody order
- Updating the bank before Aadhaar and PAN agree with each other
Should you do it yourself or use a service in Tripura?
We will say it plainly: some people should do this themselves.
| Point of comparison | Doing it yourself | Using Tripura Name Change |
|---|---|---|
| Money out | Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 if nothing goes wrong, plus a trip to Delhi or courier risk | Government fee plus a quoted service charge |
| Your time | Several days across notary, two newspaper offices and the Gazette counter in Delhi | About 30 minutes of sending scans and confirming spelling |
| Travel | Agartala to Delhi if you file in person, or posting originals to a counter you have never seen | None. Our Delhi head office files it |
| Risk of paying twice | Real, because the fee is non-refundable and small errors are common | We check spelling with you in writing before anything prints |
| Best if | You are in Delhi anyway, have time, and are comfortable with Government counters | You live in Tripura, are working, or the case has any complication in it |
If you happen to be in Delhi for a few weeks, you are patient, and your case is a plain adult name change with no marriage, divorce, minor or service record angle, you can genuinely do this yourself. Read this page, follow the order, and you will be fine. If you are in Tripura and any part of that sentence is not true for you, a service saves you more than it costs.
Your trust and security first
A name change means handing your identity documents to someone you have never met. We take that seriously, and we would rather be slow and correct than fast and wrong.
Your documents stay private
Your scans go to one advisor and one file. We do not resell your details, we do not add you to a marketing list, and we do not share your papers with anyone outside your case.
Nothing prints without your written yes
We send you the exact wording, letter by letter, and wait for your confirmation before the affidavit is typed or the notice is booked. The Gazette fee is non-refundable, so this step protects your money.
Government fee shown separately
Our charge and the Government fee are always quoted as two lines. You can see exactly how much reaches the Government and how much is for our work, before you pay anything.
An office in Agartala and a desk in Delhi
You can walk into our Capital Complex office with your papers, and the Delhi head office files your case at the Gazette counter. Nothing is posted to an address nobody has visited.
We tell you when you do not need us
If your case is a Registrar correction rather than a Gazette, we say so and point you to the right office. We would rather lose the job than sell you the wrong one.
Your originals come back to you
Original newspaper pages and the notarised affidavit are returned once the file is accepted, and we keep a scanned set so a lost document years later is not a fresh problem.

Name change in Tripura, the questions Google gets asked most
Is a name change legal without a Gazette in Tripura?
You may use any name socially, but Government records need proof. Aadhaar, PAN and Passport Seva Kendra Agartala ask for the Gazette notification, so in practice a change without a Gazette is not usable where it matters.
Is there a Central Gazette office in Agartala?
No. There is one Central Gazette office in India, the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Tripura applicants either post the file, travel, or use a service with a Delhi desk. That is why we keep a head office in Delhi.
How do I check whether my Gazette is published?
Search Part IV of the Weekly Gazette on egazette.gov.in from the fourth Saturday after filing and download the PDF free. The exact steps are on check status and download your Gazette copy.
Can I change my name more than once?
Yes. There is no legal limit on how many times you may change your name, and each change follows the same three steps and the same fee. Repeated changes can attract questions during passport and background verification, so keep every Gazette you have ever been issued.
Does a name change affect my CIBIL score or my bank loans?
The change itself does not affect a credit record. Problems come from an incomplete update, where the bank has the new name and the credit bureau still has the old one. Update Aadhaar and PAN first, then tell every bank and lender in the same week.
Can Tripura residents working outside India change their name?
Yes. The Central Gazette accepts applications from abroad at a higher fee, commonly around Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000. Documents are usually attested at the Indian mission or handled through a family member in Tripura holding an authorisation from you.
What is Part IV of the Gazette of India?
Part IV is the section of the Gazette of India where notices that are not from the Government are printed, and that is where personal name change notifications appear. Part IV belongs to the Central Gazette only. The Tripura Gazette has its own parts and numbering, so do not assume the two match.
Is the Gazette copy I download from egazette.gov.in valid in Tripura?
Yes. The Gazette of India has been digital only since October 2015, and the PDF downloaded from egazette.gov.in is the official copy accepted in every office in Tripura. There is no separate paper original to collect, and nobody should charge you for the download.
How long is a Gazette notification valid for?
Forever. A published notification does not expire and does not need renewal. It stays in the Gazette record permanently, and you can download the same PDF again years later from the e-Gazette portal.
Which Bengali and English newspapers are accepted for a Tripura name change notice?
Any Bengali daily and any English daily that actually circulate in Tripura, with identical wording in both. The Gazette office checks the masthead and date on the full page, not the brand of the paper. We book papers that print a clear masthead and hand over the full page.
What is the difference between a name change and a name correction?
A change replaces one name with a different one and needs the Gazette. A correction fixes an error in an existing record, such as a misspelling in a birth certificate or a TBSE mark sheet, and goes through the office that issued that record. Some cases need both, and they are quoted separately.
Can a shop or business in Tripura change its name through the Gazette?
A company name change goes through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, not the personal Gazette route on this page. A proprietor changing their own name will usually need the personal Gazette first, then update the GST and Agartala Municipal Corporation trade licence records that carry that name.
