University Degree Name Correction in Tripura
A degree is printed once, for a ceremony, from a name the college copied off your Class 12 certificate three or four years earlier. Nobody checks it in between, which is why so many graduates in Tripura discover the error on the day the certificate is handed over. Before printing, a correction is usually a form and a signature. After printing, it becomes an application to the Controller of Examinations, a surrendered degree and a wait. This page covers both sides of that line, the other documents that carry your name separately, what happens for a married graduate, and what to do when the degree cannot be reprinted at all.
Apply to the Controller of Examinations of the university that issued the degree, with your Class 10 certificate as the governing proof of spelling. If the degree has not yet been printed, return the pre-convocation name confirmation form and the problem ends there. If it has been issued, expect to surrender the original against a corrected one and to pay a fee, and ask separately for corrected grade cards, a migration certificate and a transcript. If the degree records a name you no longer use, publish a Central Gazette notice instead.
Degree corrections at a glance
- Who decides
- The Controller of Examinations of your own university, not the college and not any board
- Universities in Tripura
- Tripura University at Suryamaninagar, Maharaja Bir Bikram University, NIT Agartala, ICFAI University Tripura, and the open and distance institutions
- Governing proof
- The Class 10 certificate; universities treat it as the authority on how your name is spelt
- Where the error enters
- The college admission form, copied from the Class 12 certificate by hand
- The easy window
- The name confirmation stage before the degree is printed for convocation
- After issue
- Application, fee, and usually surrender of the original degree
- Separate documents
- Semester grade cards, provisional certificate, migration certificate, transcript and the degree itself
- Two fee heads
- Correction of a name and change of a name are commonly charged differently; ask which applies
- Married graduates
- Universities differ: some endorse on the marriage certificate, some reissue, some decline
- Cannot be reprinted
- The Central Gazette is what explains the degree for the rest of your working life
Key takeaways
- The Class 10 certificate, not your preference and not your Aadhaar, is what a university uses to settle a spelling.
- Read the name confirmation form the university circulates before convocation. Signing it without reading is how wrong degrees get printed.
- Correcting the degree does not correct your grade cards, your migration certificate or your transcript. Ask for each one.
- A transcript matters more than the degree for anyone going abroad, because that is what foreign universities read.
- Ask the Controller whether your request is a correction or a change of name, because the fee and the chances differ.
- Where a university will not reprint, a Central Gazette notice does the job permanently and costs less than arguing.
Where a degree name error actually comes from
The board side is on TBSE marksheet name correction and, for CBSE holders, CBSE name correction; if your degree disagrees with your Aadhaar, see marksheet and Aadhaar mismatch. The error is almost never the university's invention. Somebody at a college counter copied your name off the Class 12 certificate into an admission form, or you filled it yourself in a hurry on the day of counselling, and that entry became your registration record. Every semester grade card was printed from it, the provisional certificate repeated it, and the degree copied it last. That is why the correction is never just about the degree, and why universities ask for the Class 10 certificate: it is the earliest formal record and the one they treat as deciding the spelling. The wider ordering of education records is on name change in education documents in Tripura.
Who decides at each university in Tripura
| Institution | Where the application goes | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tripura University, Suryamaninagar | Controller of Examinations, through your college | A central university, with affiliated colleges across the state |
| Maharaja Bir Bikram University | Controller of Examinations | The state university at Agartala |
| National Institute of Technology, Agartala | Academic or examination section | Circulates a name confirmation stage before convocation |
| ICFAI University Tripura | Its own examination office | A private university with its own regulations |
| Open and distance universities | The regional centre, then the head office | Slower, and worth starting earlier |
| Polytechnics and diploma institutes | The issuing institute or council | Board certificate is the supporting evidence |
Where you studied at an affiliated college, the college forwards but does not decide. Where you studied at the university itself, you approach the examination office directly. Either way the decision belongs to the university that printed the degree.
The convocation window, and the form people sign without reading
Before a convocation, universities commonly circulate a name confirmation notice asking every candidate to confirm exactly how the name is to be printed on the degree, with the Class 10 certificate as the proof, and to declare that no claim for a change will be made afterwards. Students sign it in a hurry because it arrives with a dozen other formalities.
| Stage | What it takes to fix |
|---|---|
| At admission | Telling the clerk; nothing else |
| On the first semester grade card | A short application to the examination section |
| At the name confirmation stage | Writing the correct name on the form and attaching the Class 10 certificate |
| After the degree is printed | An application, a fee, the original surrendered and a wait |
| Years later, in employment | Often no reprint at all, and the Gazette becomes the answer |
The five university documents that carry your name
| Document | Who asks for it | Corrected separately? |
|---|---|---|
| Degree certificate | Employers, councils, higher study admissions | Yes, and usually the slowest |
| Semester grade cards or marksheets | Employers verifying subjects and results | Yes, each one, and often charged per card |
| Provisional certificate | The job you took before the degree was printed | Usually superseded by the degree |
| Migration certificate | Another university at admission | Yes, request a fresh one after the correction |
| Transcript | Foreign universities, credential evaluators, visa files | Yes, and it matters more than the degree for going abroad |
Ask for all of them in one application if the university allows it. A corrected degree sitting on top of eight grade cards in the old name looks exactly like the problem you were trying to solve.
Applying once the degree has been issued
What you send
- Application to the Controller of Examinations, in the university's format
- The original degree, where the university requires it surrendered
- Class 10 certificate, as the proof of spelling
- Class 12 certificate and the college admission record if asked
- Affidavit stating the position
- Fee receipt under the correct head
What to ask in the covering letter
- Whether the request is treated as a correction or a change
- Whether grade cards can be corrected in the same application
- Whether a fresh transcript will be issued in the corrected name
- How long the university expects to take
- Whether the original will be returned or retained
Universities that have been sending degrees to convocation for decades have a settled way of handling this, and asking these five questions in writing at the start saves two rounds of correspondence.
Correction or change: the two fee heads
| Correction of name | Change of name | |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | A spelling or clerical difference from your school certificates | A name genuinely different from the one you studied under |
| What proves it | The Class 10 and Class 12 certificates | A Gazette notification, and a marriage certificate or decree where relevant |
| Fee | The lower head | Commonly the higher head |
| Likely outcome | Allowed where the school certificates support it | Depends on the university's regulations; some endorse rather than reprint |
Applying under the wrong head is a common reason for a file to come back without a decision. Ask first, in one line, and pay once.
Transcripts, credential checks and study abroad
For a graduate applying overseas, the transcript is the document that carries weight: a consolidated statement of subjects, marks and credits issued by the university, often sent in a sealed envelope or directly to a credential evaluator. Foreign universities and evaluators compare the name on the transcript with the name on the passport, and a difference is queried before an application is read. Three things follow. Ask for the transcript after the correction, not before. Make sure the university's transcript, your degree and your passport all carry the same spelling. And where the university cannot reprint an old degree, send the Central Gazette notice with the transcript, because an evaluator can accept a published notification where it cannot accept a personal explanation. The passport side is on name change in passport.
Married graduates and the three answers universities give
A woman who married after graduating and wants her degree in her married name will get one of three answers, and it is worth knowing them before you apply.
| Answer | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| We will endorse it | The marriage certificate is recorded and the married name noted against the record | Simplest outcome; ask for it in writing on the document |
| We will reissue on the marriage certificate | A fresh degree in the married name, original surrendered | Pay the fee and request corrected grade cards too |
| We do not change a degree after issue | The degree records the name you studied under, which is a defensible position | Keep the degree as it is and use a Central Gazette notice to link the names |
There is nothing wrong with a degree in your maiden name, and many professionals keep it deliberately. What matters is that something in your file explains the difference. The marriage route generally is on name change after marriage in Tripura.
Correcting a university record, step by step
Lay out every document
Degree, grade cards, provisional and migration certificates, transcript; note what each says.
Fix the school certificates first
The university will be reading them; see TBSE certificate name change.
Ask the Controller one question
Correction or change, which head, which documents.
Apply once, for everything
Degree, grade cards, migration certificate and transcript together where allowed.
Surrender and collect
Original degree returned where required; check the new one line by line.
Publish if it cannot be reprinted
Central Gazette, which travels with the old degree for good.
Central Gazette for graduates in Tripura
Universities are not obliged to rewrite history, and many decline. A degree certifies that a person of a stated name was awarded a qualification on a stated date, and an institution that reprints it lightly weakens every degree it has ever issued. That is a fair position, and it leaves the graduate needing a different kind of document: not a new degree, but a published record that the person named on the old one is the person standing in front of the employer today. The Central Gazette does exactly that. It is a notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India, issued by the Government of India, and once it exists your old degree stops being a problem and becomes a document with an explanation attached to it permanently.
When a graduate should publish rather than apply
| Your situation | Why publishing is better than applying |
|---|---|
| The university has said it does not alter degrees after issue | There is no application left to make, and the Gazette answers every future employer |
| You changed your name after graduating | The degree correctly records the name you studied under; nothing is wrong to correct |
| You are already in service and a verification is due | Publication is commonly 30 to 45 days, far faster than a university correction |
| Your degree, your service records and your Aadhaar tell three stories | One published notice ties them together for every office at once |
| You are sending documents to a foreign evaluator | They accept a Government notification; they cannot accept a covering letter from you |
What the papers actually say
A degree is rarely wrong on its own. The same error usually sits on the Class 10 and Class 12 certificates too, and this wording corrects all of them in a single notice.

Filing it from Tripura while we handle Delhi
The file is accepted at one office only, the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, and our head office lodges it there in person. Graduates working in Agartala, or posted outside the state, do not travel for it. Your two steps are local: the affidavit, sworn before a notary in person because that is the one part nobody can do online, and the notices in one Bengali daily and one English daily carrying the same wording, with the complete original page of each preserved for the file.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Government fee | Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, on BharatKosh only, non-refundable and revised each financial year, so we confirm it on the day of filing |
| Our service charge | A separate figure, given before anything is paid, never folded into the Government fee |
| Applicants abroad | A higher Government fee applies, commonly in the range of Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,000, and the file can be run through a family member in Tripura |
| The file | Prescribed form in two copies, undertaking, request letter to the Controller of Publications, soft copy of the notice, identity of applicant and witness, two photographs, both complete newspaper pages |
| Publication | Part IV of the Gazette of India, commonly 30 to 45 days after filing |
| Your copy | A free PDF from egazette.gov.in, digital since October 2015, needing no attestation and never expiring |

Board, university and Gazette words, explained
Words you will meet at a counter, in one place.
- Gazette notification
- A formal announcement printed in the official journal of the Government. For a name change it is the document Aadhaar, PAN, passport offices, banks and employers accept as proof that the change was made.
- Central Gazette
- The Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, Delhi. It is accepted in every office in India, including every office in Tripura, and by foreign missions.
- Part IV
- The section of the Gazette of India that carries notices from private people rather than from the Government. A personal name change appears here and nowhere else.
- Admission register
- The school register recording your name as entered at admission. It is the evidence a board checks a correction against, and a certified extract of it is the single most useful paper in an education file.
- Head of Institution
- The principal or headmaster who forwards a correction application to a board. Boards deal with institutions rather than with ex-students at a counter.
- Transfer certificate
- The leaving certificate from a previous school, submitted at admission. It shows how an earlier school recorded your name and is asked for in every board correction.
- Migration certificate
- The board or university document required when you join an institution under a different examining body. It carries your name and is usually forgotten after a correction.
- Transcript
- A consolidated statement of subjects, marks and credits issued by a university, read by foreign universities and credential evaluators against your passport.
- Controller of Examinations
- The officer in a university who decides applications to correct a name on a degree, a grade card or a transcript.
- Public notice wording
- The version of the notice used when a name was written wrongly rather than changed. It states the wrong entry, gives the correct name and asks that the record be amended, and it can name more than one family member.
- Correction against change
- A correction brings a record into line with what was already written elsewhere. A change records a name nobody has recorded before. The two need different documents and different wording.
- Affidavit
- A written statement you swear is true before a notary. For a name change it records your old name, your new name, your parent's or husband's name, your address and the reason.
Graduates from every district of Tripura
Universities correspond by post and email, so a graduate in Belonia or Dharmanagar is not disadvantaged. We advise from any district and file the Gazette in Delhi.
