Child Name Change in School and TBSE Records in Tripura
Every marksheet a child will ever hold is copied from one line in one book: the school's admission register. The TBSE registration copies the register, the Madhyamik marksheet copies the registration, the HS marksheet copies the Madhyamik, and the university copies the HS. So a child's name change in Tripura is won or lost at the school, and won or lost on one date: the day the school sends its registration list to the board. This page gives you the school steps, the TBSE and CBSE routes at each stage, and the cases where no Gazette is needed at all.
A child's name is changed in school records in Tripura by applying to the head of the school with the Gazette notification (for a change) or the birth certificate (for a correction of a clerk's slip), and having the admission register corrected. Do it before the school sends the child's registration to TBSE in Class 9, or to CBSE with the list of candidates; the registration then carries the new name onto every marksheet. After registration, the change goes to the board through the school on its correction form and fee; after the marksheet is printed, the board reissues it, more slowly.
The minor name change guide covers who signs and the Gazette route at the minor fee. This page starts where that one ends, with the Gazette PDF in hand, or with no Gazette at all where the school itself made the slip, and follows the name through the school and the board.
School and board records at a glance
- Root record
- The school admission register; the board copies it, and every marksheet copies the board
- Correction at school
- A clerk's slip against the birth certificate: application to the head with the birth certificate; no Gazette
- Change at school
- A different name: application to the head with the Gazette PDF and the parents' affidavit
- The deadline
- Before the school submits TBSE registration in Class 9, or the CBSE list of candidates for Class 9 and 11
- After registration
- Board correction through the school on the board's form and fee, with the Gazette
- After the marksheet
- Board reissue with the Gazette; slower, and older cases can need a court order at CBSE
- Transfer certificate
- Issued in the new name once the register is corrected; carries the name to the next school
- Community surname
- Match the parent's Aadhaar spelling on the register from the first form
- Then
- Birth certificate, Aadhaar, passport, ST certificate, scholarship portals
Key takeaways
- Fix the admission register and the board follows. Fix the board without the register and the next form copies the old name again.
- If the school wrote the name wrongly against the birth certificate, it is the school's correction to make, on your application, with no Gazette and no fee.
- If you have changed the name, the school changes its register on the Gazette. A school cannot refuse a Gazette; it can ask for the parents' application and the birth certificate.
- The registration list is the deadline. Before it, the change costs one application. After it, the board's form, fee and timeline. After the marksheet, a reissue.
- CBSE schools in Agartala run their own list-of-candidates deadline in Class 9 and 11 and forward all corrections themselves; a student cannot apply direct.
- Fix the community surname spelling on the register to the parent's Aadhaar now, and the child never inherits the family's spelling problem.
The school admission register: why a child's name change starts there
When a child is admitted, the school writes the name into its admission register from the birth certificate, or from what the parent said. That entry is copied onto the class register, the ID card, the report cards, and, in Class 9, onto the registration form the school sends to the board. The board prints the marksheet from its registration data, not from anything the parent later sends. The university reads the marksheet. A Government job verification reads the marksheet against the register.
That chain has one consequence: every correction or change goes into the admission register first, and the board only ever corrects its record to match the register. A board correction that leaves the register unchanged is undone the next time the school fills a form.
Correction or change at the school: which one your child needs
| Case | Route | Apply with | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Register spells the name differently from the birth certificate | Correction | Parents' application to the head, birth certificate copy | No |
| Register carries a nickname or a home name, birth certificate the formal name | Correction to the birth certificate | Same, plus the Aadhaar if it matches | No |
| Register and birth certificate agree, and you want a different name | Change | Gazette PDF, parents' affidavit, newspaper pages, birth certificate | Yes |
| Adding a surname the child never had | Change | Same | Yes |
| Surname spelt as Deb Barma on the register, Debbarma on the father's Aadhaar, birth certificate blank surname | Correction if the birth certificate is corrected first; otherwise a change | Corrected birth certificate, or the Gazette | Depends |
| Birth certificate itself has the slip | Correct the birth certificate at the Registrar first, then the school | Corrected certificate | No |
The three stages of a child's name change in school records
Same change, three prices, depending on the date.
| Stage | What to do | Who acts | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Before the board registration list goes Nursery to Class 9, before the school submits registration | Correct or change the admission register; the registration form carries the new name automatically | The school | One application |
| 2. After registration, before the marksheet Class 9 registered, Class 10 exam not yet held or results not printed | Board correction of the registration record, through the school, with the Gazette | School forwards; board corrects | Board form, fee, weeks |
| 3. After the marksheet is printed Madhyamik or HS certificate issued | Board reissue of the marksheet and certificate in the new name, with the Gazette; old certificate surrendered | School forwards; board reissues | Slowest; older cases can need a court order at CBSE |
TBSE registration for the Madhyamik examination is completed by the school in Class 9 against the board's annual notice, and the same happens again for HS in Class 11. CBSE schools submit the list of candidates for Class 9 and Class 11 in the same way. Whatever the exact date in a given year, the rule is the same: the change is cheapest before the school submits, and the school office knows the date.
The school steps for a child's name change in Tripura, register to transfer certificate
Application to the head
A one-page letter from both parents asking for the admission register entry to be corrected or changed, with the child's class, section and admission number.
Attach the proof
Correction: the birth certificate. Change: the Gazette PDF printed, the parents' affidavit, both newspaper pages, the birth certificate. Both parents' Aadhaar in either case.
Register corrected
The head corrects the admission register, initials and dates the entry, and notes the Gazette number and date beside it.
Class records follow
Class register, ID card, report cards, the school's online records and any scholarship entry the school made.
Board registration
If registration is yet to go, nothing more. If it has gone, the school forwards the board correction (next sections).
Transfer certificate
Any transfer certificate issued after this is in the new name, so the next school opens its register correctly.
The minor's affidavit the school reads is on name change affidavit for a minor; the Gazette it is built on is on Gazette name change in Tripura.
The TBSE route for a child's name change after registration
The Tripura Board of Secondary Education corrects a candidate's particulars only on an application forwarded by the head of the institution, against its own correction register and fee structure. The board's forms are on its website and its office is at Agartala. The head certifies that the admission register has been corrected and that the Gazette is genuine; the board corrects the registration record, or reissues the marksheet and certificate where they have been printed. A parent cannot apply to TBSE directly.
| Stage | What the school sends TBSE | What comes back |
|---|---|---|
| Registered, exam not held | Correction application on the board's form, the Gazette, the corrected register extract, the fee | Corrected registration; the admit card and marksheet print in the new name |
| Exam held, marksheet printed | Reissue application, the Gazette, the original marksheet and certificate, the fee | Fresh marksheet and certificate in the new name |
| Madhyamik done, HS pending | Both: correction of the HS registration and reissue of the Madhyamik documents | Both records aligned before the HS marksheet prints |
The CBSE route for schools in Agartala and across Tripura
Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and the private CBSE schools in Agartala, Udaipur and Dharmanagar follow the CBSE examination bye-laws. Two things matter. First, CBSE distinguishes a correction, bringing the board record into line with the school admission register, from a change of name, which needs the Gazette and, for older or disputed cases, a court order. Second, every application goes through the school; CBSE does not take an application from a parent directly. The school's list of candidates for Class 9 and Class 11 is CBSE's registration, and the same three stages apply: before the list, after the list, after the certificate.
Before the list of candidates
Correct the admission register; the school submits the list in the new name. No board form.
After the list or after results
The school forwards CBSE's correction application through its regional office process, with the Gazette for a change, the register extract, the fee, and a court order where CBSE asks for one on a change made years after results.
Community surname spelling on a child's school record in Tripura
The admission register is where most families' spelling problems begin: the father is Debbarma on his Aadhaar and a teacher writes Deb Barma on the register. Corrected now, against the parent's Aadhaar and the birth certificate, it is a school correction; left until the Madhyamik marksheet prints, it is a board reissue, and left until the passport, it is a lifetime of "one and the same person" affidavits. The spelling rule for the whole family is on community surname spelling in Tripura; for a child, the anchor is the parent's Aadhaar, and the register is corrected to it before registration.
If the school refuses to change a child's name
| The school says | The position | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| "Get a Gazette" for a slip the school made | A register that disagrees with the birth certificate shown at admission is the school's error | Written application with the birth certificate; ask for the refusal in writing; escalate to the Inspector of Schools for your district |
| "Both parents must sign" when one has a custody order | A court order covering the name is sufficient; the custodial parent's signature is enough | Show the order; the school cannot demand the other parent's signature against it |
| "We need the board's permission first" | The register is the school's record; the board corrects to match it, not the reverse | Ask for the register correction now and the board forwarding after |
| "Too late, registration has gone" | True that the stage has changed; not true that nothing can be done | Board correction through the school, stage 2 |
The custody and consent questions are on child surname change after divorce in Tripura. An adopted child's register entry is changed on the adoption order; see name change after adoption.
The records that copy the school record for a child in Tripura
| Record | Where | Carry |
|---|---|---|
| Birth certificate | The Registrar that issued it | Gazette; a Section 15 correction; see birth certificate |
| Aadhaar | Seva Kendra in your district | Gazette, updated birth certificate, parent's Aadhaar; do the 5 or 15 biometric update at the same visit |
| Scholarship portals: NSP, state ST and SC scholarships | Through the school's institute login | The school updates the profile to match the register and Aadhaar |
| ST, SC or OBC certificate; PRTC | e-District Tripura | Gazette, updated Aadhaar; the community entry unchanged |
| Passport | PSK Agartala | Gazette set, both parents' consent or the single-parent declaration; a bonafide certificate from the school in the new name helps |
| University, entrance exams | Each body | The marksheet in the new name is what they read; align it first |
The order for the rest of a child's records is on the minor name change guide.

Mistakes parents in Tripura make with school and TBSE records
Order and timing
- Waiting for the Madhyamik result to "see if it matters"
- Applying to the board without correcting the register first
- Letting HS registration go while the Madhyamik reissue is pending
- Changing a name in Class 9 after the registration list has been submitted, when it could have gone in Class 8
Paper and spelling
- Buying a Gazette for a slip the school made against the birth certificate
- Letting the register spell the community surname differently from the parent's Aadhaar
- Two names in use, school and home, with no decision before registration
- Losing the old transfer certificate, which the next school and the board both read
Central Gazette behind a school record change
A school will change a child's name in its register when there is something on record authorising it, and the cheapest such thing is a published notice. Where the name was simply written wrongly at admission, the notice is worded as a correction rather than a change, and one notice can cover a parent and a child together. That is why so many Tripura families publish once and then walk a single page into the school office.
When the Central Gazette is the answer
| Your situation | Why the Gazette is what works |
|---|---|
| The school wants authority before amending its register | A published notice is the authority it accepts |
| The wrong name is the parents' as well as the child's | One correction notice can name all of them |
| The board record will need changing later | The same page supports the board application |
| The change is before Class 10 | Doing it now saves a board correction afterwards |
| A transfer certificate has already gone out in the wrong name | Publication lets the new school record the right one |
The papers that make up the file
The file is five papers long, and each one takes its wording from the one before it.
| Step | Paper | What it has to contain |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Affidavit | Non-judicial stamp paper, notarised in person in Tripura, naming you, your father's or husband's name and your full address, declaring the change from the old name to the new one, and closing with a verification giving the place and date. Where a name was written wrongly rather than changed, the affidavit says so and gives the correct name. |
| 2 | Two newspaper notices | The same wording in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, with the complete original page of each kept. A cutting is refused. |
| 3 | CD certificate | A separate signed page declaring that the CD and the hard copy carry the same matter, that you are responsible for any mismatch and for the quality of the CD, and that the CD is in MS Word format. |
| 4 | Request letter | Addressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, saying the formalities are complete and the documents are enclosed. |
| 5 | The notice, in two copies | For a wrongly written name this is a public notice giving the wrong entry and the correct name. Two witnesses sign it, each writing a full name and a complete address. |
What the papers actually say
It helps to see the paper rather than read about it. This is the wording that goes to the Department, with your own details in place of the brackets.

Words used when a child's name changes
The vocabulary of a Tripura name change, explained plainly.
- Specimen form for a minor
- The separate notice form used for a child, made and signed by a parent, giving the child's age and the new name. The child signs nothing.
- Minor fee
- The lower Government fee charged when a Gazette notice is filed for a person under eighteen, commonly Rs 1,700 against Rs 1,100 for an adult.
- Guardian consent
- The written agreement of both parents, or of a single parent with the prescribed annexure, required before a child's name is changed on any record.
- Deponent
- The person who swears an affidavit. For a minor's name change the deponent is a parent, never the child.
- Affidavit
- A written statement you swear is true before a notary. For a name change it records your old name, your new name, your parent's or husband's name, your address and the reason.
- Admission register
- The school register recording your name as entered at admission. It is the evidence a board checks a correction against, and a certified extract of it is the single most useful paper in an education file.
- Head of Institution
- The principal or headmaster who forwards a correction application to a board. Boards deal with institutions rather than with ex-students at a counter.
- Registrar of Births and Deaths
- The authority that issues and corrects a birth certificate, at the municipal body, Nagar Panchayat, Village Committee or Gram Panchayat that registered the birth.
- Newspaper notice
- The same wording published in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura. The complete original page of each is kept, because a cutting is refused.
- CD certificate
- A signed page declaring that the soft copy and the hard copy of your notice carry the same matter, that you are responsible for any mismatch and for the quality of the CD, and that the file is in MS Word format.
- Proforma
- The typed page that becomes your Gazette notice. It is filed in two identical copies, signed in your existing old name, and witnessed by two people.
- Notary public
- A person authorised by the Government to witness signatures and certify documents. Notarisation is done in person in Tripura and is the one step that cannot be completed online.
School and TBSE name change from every district of Tripura

School and TBSE records, the questions parents search in Tripura
Can the school change my child's name without a Gazette?
For a correction to the birth certificate, yes: it is the school's own record. For a different name, the school changes the register on the Gazette.
Can I apply to TBSE directly?
No. The head of the institution forwards the application against the corrected admission register. The same is true of CBSE.
When is the deadline?
The day the school submits the child's registration to TBSE in Class 9, or the CBSE list of candidates for Class 9 or 11. The school office knows the date for the year.
What if the Madhyamik marksheet is already printed?
The board reissues it in the new name through the school, with the Gazette and the original surrendered. Do it before HS registration goes.
Does the transfer certificate change?
Any transfer certificate issued after the register is corrected is in the new name.
Will the scholarship portal update?
Through the school's login, once the register and Aadhaar match.
Ask before the registration list goes
Send the child's birth certificate, the school ID and both parents' Aadhaar, and tell us the class. You hear whether it is a school correction with no Gazette, or a change, and whether it must be done before the board registration date. If the Gazette is needed, we file it at the minor fee and give you the school application and the board form ready to sign. Both fee numbers separately, before you pay anything.
