Date of Birth Correction in Aadhaar and Birth Certificate
Aadhaar allows a date of birth to be updated once in a lifetime. Not twice, not on appeal, once. A name may be changed twice and an address as often as you move, but the date gets a single chance and it is enforced. That one fact should change the order you work in, because most people spend the chance first, fix their board record months later, and then discover the Aadhaar is wrong again with nothing left to use.
Settle the source records first, the birth register and the board certificate, because Aadhaar gives you one date of birth update for life. Then obtain an eligible proof of date of birth, usually the birth certificate, and go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, since this is generally not a self service update. Check the result carefully before leaving, and only then bring PAN and the rest into line.
Aadhaar and a date of birth at a glance
- How many date updates
- One, in a lifetime
- How many name updates
- Two, which is why people underestimate the date rule
- Gender
- Also once
- Address and mobile
- No lifetime limit
- Self service online?
- Generally no. A Seva Kendra visit is expected
- Proof needed
- An eligible proof of date of birth document
- Under 18
- A birth certificate is required
- Declared against verified
- The procedure treats these differently, so ask which yours is
- After the chance is used
- An exception process exists. It is not a second normal update
- The right order
- Source records first, Aadhaar last
Key takeaways
- One chance means spending it on a settled date, not a hopeful one.
- Fix the birth register and board record before touching Aadhaar.
- This is not the easy online update people assume it is.
- Find out whether your date is recorded as declared or verified.
- A birth certificate is the document that carries this.
- Everything else follows Aadhaar, so get Aadhaar right once.
One chance, and why it changes the order of work
Here is the sequence that goes wrong, and it is extremely common. Somebody notices their date of birth is wrong. Aadhaar feels like the easiest thing to fix, so they fix it, using whatever document they have to hand. Months later the board correction comes through with a slightly different date, or the birth register turns out to say something else again. Now the Aadhaar needs changing a second time, and there is no second time.
Everywhere else on this site we tell you to correct Aadhaar first, because everything verifies against it. For a date of birth the advice is the opposite. Aadhaar goes last, once the records that actually establish a date have been settled, because it is the one document that will not let you have another go.
How the Aadhaar limits compare
People underestimate the date rule because they have heard of the name rule and assume everything works alike. It does not.
| Field | Limit |
|---|---|
| Date of birth | Once in a lifetime, strictly enforced |
| Gender | Once in a lifetime |
| Name | Twice |
| Address | No lifetime limit |
| Mobile and email | No lifetime limit |
| Care of line | Part of the address, so not a name or date update |
The reasoning given is that a date of birth is a core identity attribute, and frequent changes to such data would undermine the reliability of the whole system. Courts hearing challenges have referred to the once in a lifetime position as published by the authority. The name limit is covered on the Aadhaar name change limit page.
Declared against verified
Not every Aadhaar date of birth was recorded the same way. The current procedure distinguishes a date that was declared by the resident, or recorded as approximate, from one verified against a documentary proof at the time.
That distinction can matter to how your request is handled, and almost nobody knows to ask which category theirs falls into. It costs one question at the counter, and the answer tells you what you are dealing with before you commit your single update.
Why it matters
- It describes how your existing entry came to be there
- The procedure treats the two situations differently
- It affects what proof is expected of you
- It is a question staff can answer
What to do with the answer
- Ask before you submit anything
- Bring the strongest proof you have either way
- Do not assume your case matches somebody else's
- Confirm the current rules on the day, since they are revised
The order that protects your one chance
Settle the birth register
At the Registrar who registered the birth.
Settle the board record
Or establish that it cannot be changed, and why.
Confirm the final date
The one your strong records actually support.
Gather the proof
An eligible proof of date of birth document.
Go to a Seva Kendra
This is generally not a self service update.
Check, then cascade
Verify the update, then PAN, bank and the rest.
What counts as proof of date of birth
The authority maintains a list of accepted documents and revised it during 2026, widening what it will take across several categories. What follows is orientation, and the current list on the day governs.
| Document | Note |
|---|---|
| Birth certificate | The natural document for this, and required for residents under 18 |
| Valid Indian passport | Among the most widely accepted documents across categories |
| Specified education records | Board certificates, within what the current list allows |
| Certain Government issued cards | Accepted in some categories, subject to the list |
| What is accepted differs by age | A document valid for one age group may not serve another |
| The list is revised | Confirm before travelling to a centre |
The safest approach is to carry the birth certificate and your board certificate together, because between them they cover most situations and they are also the two documents that settle the date in the first place.
Why this means a Seva Kendra visit
Many Aadhaar updates can be done from a phone, which is why people assume this one can. A date of birth correction is generally not available as a self service change online, and expecting otherwise wastes an evening and then a day.
Before you go
- Confirm the current document list
- Carry originals, not only copies
- Know the exact date you are claiming
- Ask whether your entry is declared or verified
Before you leave
- Check the acknowledgement shows the right date
- Keep the update request number safely
- Note how long the update should take to reflect
- Download a fresh copy once it does
Centres across the districts are listed on the Aadhaar Seva Kendra page.
The birth certificate comes first
A birth certificate is the statutory record of when you were born. It is a public document, which means it carries a presumption of correctness, and it is the document that both the board and the Aadhaar counter will take most seriously.
So the first question is not what your Aadhaar says. It is whether the birth was registered, what the register holds, and whether that entry is right. If the register is correct, everything else is corrected towards it. If it is wrong, that is the correction to make before any other.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| The register is right, Aadhaar is wrong | Straightforward. Use the certificate as your proof |
| The register is wrong too | Correct it at the Registrar first, then Aadhaar |
| The birth was never registered | A separate application with its own rules and limits |
| The register and the board disagree | Resolve that before spending the Aadhaar chance |
| You hold no birth certificate at all | Find out whether one can be obtained before anything else |
The Registrar route in Tripura, including which authority holds which register, is on birth certificate name correction in Tripura.
If you have already used the chance
This is the situation we most often meet, and we would rather describe it accurately than encourage false hope. Once the permitted update has been used, a further change does not go through the normal route.
An exception process exists. The authority has indicated that exceptional cases may be considered separately, with a self declaration from the resident acknowledging that the once in a lifetime chance has already been availed, and its helpline can explain the applicable procedure. That is a real route and it is not a second ordinary update, so do not plan around it succeeding.
What helps
- A statutory birth certificate supporting the date
- Board records consistent with it
- A clear explanation of how the first update came to be wrong
- Every other document already agreeing
What to expect
- A separate process rather than a counter update
- No guarantee of a decision in your favour
- Time, and possibly more than one attempt
- Advice worth taking before you begin
If you are in this position, the lesson for anybody reading over your shoulder is the one at the top of this page: the chance is spent last, on a date every other record already supports.
After Aadhaar is right
| Next | Note |
|---|---|
| PAN | Corrected against a supporting document, and compared with Aadhaar |
| Bank and employer records | They work from your identity documents |
| Passport | A re-issue, with every line compared at the counter |
| Category and residence certificates | Reissued once the underlying records agree |
| Service records | For Government servants, promptly, and read the strict rules first |
The position for Government servants is materially stricter and is set out on date of birth correction in Tripura.
How long it takes
| Stage | Speed |
|---|---|
| Settling the birth register | Weeks at the Registrar |
| Settling the board record | Months, and it governs the whole timetable |
| The Aadhaar update itself | A counter visit, then a period before it reflects |
| PAN and the rest | Quick, once Aadhaar is settled |
| An exception request | Unpredictable, and not to be planned around |
What it costs
| Item | Position |
|---|---|
| The Aadhaar update | A small fee set by the authority and revised. Confirm on the day |
| Birth certificate copy or correction | The Registrar's fee, and the best money you will spend here |
| Board correction | The board's fee, with time as the real cost |
| PAN correction afterwards | The portal's own charge |
| A Gazette notice | Nothing, because it cannot change a date. Do not spend this |
| Our advice on the order | None |
The wider picture is on name change cost in Tripura.
Why a published notice does not apply to the date
A notice in the Gazette of India settles what a person is called. No Aadhaar counter will change a date of birth on the strength of one, because the notice says nothing about a date. It becomes relevant only where your name is also wrong, which is common, since the same careless entry that took a digit often took a letter too.
| What is wrong | Instrument |
|---|---|
| The date | Proof of date of birth at a Seva Kendra. Never a notice |
| The name, minor spelling | An ordinary update, within the two name updates allowed |
| The name, and both updates used | A published notice becomes relevant |
| Both, on the same Aadhaar | Separate instruments, and the date one is unrepeatable |
What goes into the file, where a name is being published
A Central Gazette file is five papers and the Department accepts or returns it as a whole. Nothing is returned afterwards, so it is assembled once and assembled properly.
| Paper | What it must say or be |
|---|---|
| 1. The affidavit | On non-judicial stamp paper, notarised in person, giving the old name, the new name, the address and the reason. The one step nobody can do online |
| 2. Two newspaper pages | One Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, identical wording, and the complete original page of each with masthead and date. A cutting is refused |
| 3. The CD certificate | A declaration that the soft copy matches the hard copy, accepting responsibility for any mismatch. The most commonly forgotten paper in the file |
| 4. The request letter | Addressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054 |
| 5. The proforma, in two copies | Computer typed, not handwritten, signed in the existing old name, with two witnesses giving signature, full name and full address |
What the notice actually says
Neither wording mentions a date of birth, and neither should.
Correction style, where a name is wrongly written
No. ADVT IV /
PUBLIC NOTICE
It is for general information that I, [your full name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, district, Tripura, PIN], do hereby declare that my name has been wrongly written as [the wrong version, quoted exactly as printed] in my [name the record, with number and year], whereas my actual and correct name is [the correct version]. Both the said names refer to one and the same person, namely myself.
[Signature in your existing name] • Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address
Change of name style
No. ADVT IV /
I, [existing name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, district, Tripura, PIN], hitherto known as [existing name], have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as [new name].
[Signed in the existing old name] • Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address
Three details decide acceptance. A wrong version is quoted exactly as printed, spacing and punctuation included, and never tidied. Where several records carry it, each is named in turn with its own wrong version. And the proforma is computer typed in two copies, signed in the existing old name, with both witnesses giving a full address. Every variant is on the proforma format page.
The stages, and how it is filed from Tripura
Only one office in India accepts a personal name change file, the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, and there is no counter in Agartala. Our Delhi head office lodges it in person. The local part stays in Tripura: the affidavit sworn before a notary, and both newspaper notices booked together so the file is not waiting on one of them. The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid on BharatKosh only, non-refundable and revised each financial year, with our service charge always given as a separate line before anything is paid. Publication appears in Part IV commonly 30 to 45 days after filing, on a weekly release cycle, and the copy is a free PDF from egazette.gov.in that never expires and needs no attestation for use in India. The full route is on Gazette name change in Tripura.
Mistakes with an Aadhaar date of birth
Order
- Correcting Aadhaar before the source records
- Spending the one chance to meet a deadline
- Guessing at the date because a document was handy
- Assuming a second update will be allowed
At the counter
- Expecting a self service online change
- Not asking whether the entry is declared or verified
- Carrying copies instead of originals
- Leaving without checking the acknowledgement
Words used here, explained
The vocabulary of an Aadhaar date of birth case, defined plainly.
- Once in a lifetime update
- The single permitted change to a date of birth on an Aadhaar record. A name allows two and an address none, which is why people underestimate this one.
- Proof of date of birth
- The category of document accepted to establish a date, such as a birth certificate or a valid passport. The accepted list is revised.
- Declared date
- A date recorded on the resident's own statement, or as approximate, rather than checked against a document at the time.
- Verified date
- A date recorded against documentary proof when the record was made. The procedure treats this differently from a declared date.
- Aadhaar Seva Kendra
- The staffed centre where this update is made, since a date of birth change is generally not available as a self service option.
- Update request number
- The reference issued at the counter, used to track the request and needed if anything goes wrong.
- Exception process
- The separate route by which a further change may be considered after the permitted update has been used. It is not a second ordinary update.
- Self declaration
- The statement a resident submits acknowledging that the once in a lifetime chance has already been used, where a further change is sought.
- Public document
- A record made by a public authority in the course of duty, such as a birth certificate, carrying a presumption of correctness.
- Source record
- The birth register or board record that actually establishes a date. Aadhaar follows these rather than leading them.
- Part IV
- The section of the Gazette of India carrying notices from private people, where a name and only a name is published.
- Central Gazette
- The Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, Delhi. It has no power over a date of birth.
