The decree is your reason. The Gazette is your proof.

Name Change After Divorce in Tripura

The decree ended the marriage. It did not put your name back. Aadhaar, PAN, your bank and the passport office still carry the married name until you change it, and a court order alone is not what they accept. This page walks you through it from Agartala or any district: the decree as the reason document, the Gazette route that every office accepts, the affidavit wording for "resuming" your name, the update order, costs, timing, and what happens with your children's surname.

1Reason document: the certified decree
3Legal steps: affidavit, newspapers, Gazette
Rs 1,100Gazette fee, adult, commonly
0Court petitions needed for the name itself
Quick answer

To change your name after divorce in Tripura, get a certified copy of the decree, sign an affidavit stating that you are resuming your name before marriage, publish the change in one Bengali and one English daily, and file the Central Gazette with the decree attached as the reason document. The fee is commonly Rs 1,100 and publication takes 30 to 45 days. Then update Aadhaar first, then PAN, bank, passport and the rest. No separate court petition is needed for the name.

After a divorce you are usually asked to make one of three choices about your name: go back to the name you had before marriage, keep the married name, or take a new name altogether. All three are legal. Keeping the married name needs no paperwork. The other two need the same three-step route, with one difference from every other name change on this site: the reason document is a court decree, not a certificate, and the affidavit says "resuming", not "adopting". Name change after divorce in Tripura is that route, done from your own district, with the decree doing the explaining.

Women and men; a husband who took a joint surname follows the same route

Key takeaways

  • The decree proves the divorce. It does not change your name. That is the single misunderstanding behind most refused applications after divorce.
  • You are not required to change back. Keeping the married name is legal and needs nothing.
  • If you do change, the Gazette route is the one every office in Tripura and outside it accepts without a debate at the counter.
  • Your affidavit says you are "resuming" your name before marriage. That wording, plus the decree, is what makes the Gazette office and the passport office comfortable.
  • Aadhaar first after publication, then PAN, bank and passport. Same order as any name change.
  • Your children's surname does not change with yours. It is a separate decision with its own consent rules.

The right column is the whole page in one word. Every change after divorce runs through the Gazette, because no office in Tripura has a "divorce route" the way Aadhaar has a marriage-certificate route for a surname added on marriage. The one thing you get from the decree is the reason, and the Gazette office wants to see it.

What the divorce decree does and does not do for your name

What it does

  • Proves that the marriage has ended, and from what date
  • Is the reason document in your affidavit and your Gazette file
  • Removes the spouse name from your passport at re-issue
  • Lets the Gazette office and the passport office accept "resuming my name before marriage" without a query

What it does not do

  • It does not order or record a change of your name
  • It does not update Aadhaar, PAN or your bank on its own
  • It does not change your children's surname
  • It does not, by itself, satisfy Passport Seva for a change of the holder's own name
Get the certified copy now. The Family Court, Agartala, or the District Court that granted the divorce issues certified copies of the decree on application. You will need one for the Gazette file and copies for each office. A photocopy of the lawyer's copy is not a certified copy.

Why the Gazette route and not the decree alone for a name change after divorce

Some websites say "the divorce decree is enough" and some say "the Gazette is mandatory". Here is what actually happens at the counters in Tripura. An Aadhaar Seva Kendra may accept a decree with an affidavit for a surname revert, because UIDAI leaves some discretion to the centre; or it may not, depending on the operator's reading. A bank branch usually wants a Gazette for any name change that is not a marriage surname. PAN wants proof of the new name, which the decree does not carry. Passport Seva treats a change of the holder's own name as a change of personal particulars that expects the Gazette; the decree is what removes the spouse's name, a different field.

So you could try the decree alone at each office and win some and lose some. Or you could do the three steps once, hold a Gazette that every office accepts, and never have the argument. For a change you will carry for the rest of your life, the second is the one we file.

Name change after divorce in Tripura, step by step

1

Certified decree

Apply to the court that granted the divorce for a certified copy. Check that your married name on it matches your current Aadhaar; that is your "old name" for everything below.

2

Decide the exact name

Your maiden name as it was on your school certificate or old ID, spelt one way, or the new name you want. Write it down once. Everything copies this line.

3

Affidavit

On stamp paper, before a notary in your district: married name as on Aadhaar, father's name, the decree details, and that you are resuming your name before marriage, or adopting a new one.

4

Two newspaper notices

One Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, identical wording, complete original pages kept.

5

File the Central Gazette

Proforma "daughter of [father]" in the married name, undertaking, request letter, CD, IDs, photographs, the decree copy, BharatKosh receipt, commonly Rs 1,100. Delivered in your name at the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.

6

Download and update

Part IV in 30 to 45 days, free PDF. Then Aadhaar, PAN, bank, passport, and the rest in order.

The Gazette steps in full are on Gazette name change in Tripura; the file contents on documents required for Gazette name change; the wording on the proforma format.

The name change affidavit after divorce in Tripura

Two things make this affidavit different from a marriage one. The relationship line goes back to "daughter of [father's name]", not "wife of", because you are no longer anyone's wife on paper. And point 2 says you are resuming your name before marriage, with the decree quoted.

I, [MARRIED NAME, as on Aadhaar], daughter of [FATHER'S NAME], resident of [ADDRESS, TRIPURA, PIN], do hereby solemnly affirm and declare:

1. That my marriage with [FORMER HUSBAND'S NAME] was dissolved by a decree of divorce dated [DATE] in [CASE NUMBER] of the [COURT].
2. That before my marriage I was known as [MAIDEN NAME], and after the dissolution of my marriage I have resumed my name before marriage and shall hereafter be known as [MAIDEN NAME] for all purposes.
3. That [MARRIED NAME] and [MAIDEN NAME] are the names of one and the same person, that is, myself.
4. That this affidavit is made to declare my change of name for record in the Gazette of India and in all my documents, and the above statements are true and correct.

For a new name rather than the maiden name, point 2 reads "have changed my name from [married name] to [new name]". Either way you sign in the married name, because on the day you sign that is still what your Aadhaar says. The reverting case, with the full wording, the old-spelling rule and a Tripura example, is on reverting to maiden name after divorce in Tripura.

Documents for a name change after divorce in Tripura

For the Gazette file

  • Certified copy of the decree of divorce
  • Notarised affidavit with the "resuming" wording
  • Complete original pages of one Bengali and one English daily
  • Proforma in duplicate, undertaking, request letter, CD with certificate
  • Aadhaar in the married name, self-attested; two photographs; witness IDs
  • BharatKosh receipt

Helpful to have

  • Any old document in the maiden name: school certificate, old voter ID, old passport
  • The marriage certificate, to show the chain from maiden to married name
  • For the passport: the old passport, and the decree for removing the spouse name
The old-name spelling. Your maiden name must be spelt the way it appeared before marriage, on your school certificate or an old ID, so that those old records link to your new Gazette. Reverting to "Debbarma" when your Class 10 certificate says "Deb Barma" creates a second mismatch. Check the old spelling before you type the affidavit; the locking rule is on community surname spelling in Tripura.

The order to update your documents after divorce in Tripura

Order of updating documents after a divorce name change, with the proof each office accepts

How long a name change after divorce takes in Tripura

⚖️

Certified decree

Days to a couple of weeks from the court, depending on the copying section.

📝

Affidavit and newspapers

About a week in your district.

🏛️

Gazette

30 to 45 days from acceptance in Delhi; 3 to 7 weeks end to end with the delivery leg.

Updates

3 to 8 weeks for the run from Aadhaar to passport, mostly waiting on Aadhaar and PAN.

A realistic plan from Agartala: about three months from the day you hold the certified decree to the day the passport re-issue is filed. None of it needs you to travel outside your district except the PSK Agartala appointment.

Your children's surname after divorce in Tripura

Your name change does not touch your children's names. A minor's surname change is its own application, through the Gazette at the minor fee, and it needs the consent of both parents or a custody or guardianship order where one parent applies alone. A mother with sole custody under the decree can apply; a mother with joint or visitation arrangements usually needs the father's signed consent or a specific court order. Schools, TBSE and the child's birth certificate each have their own correction process after the Gazette.

Handled quietly. This is the most sensitive part of a divorce file. The consent rules, the custody order route, what the birth certificate does and does not change, and the single-parent passport declaration are on child surname change after divorce in Tripura.

Tripura-specific points on name change after divorce

Which court

Divorces in Tripura are granted by the Family Court at Agartala or the District Judge's court in your district. The certified copy comes from the court that passed the decree, through its copying section, on an application with the case number.

Customary divorce

Some of Tripura's communities dissolve marriages by custom. For the Gazette file, what you need is a court order recognising the dissolution, or the community's decision recorded and recognised by the district administration. A verbal or elders' decision alone will be questioned; ask the desk before filing.

Maiden name spelling

Your maiden name goes back on the Gazette in the spelling of your old records. Pull your Class 10 certificate or old voter ID before you type the affidavit, so the restored name links to them.

Ration card and address

Leaving the former household usually means a new address on Aadhaar and a new or restored ration card entry through Tripura Food and Civil Supplies. Do the address change at the same Aadhaar visit as the name.

Mistakes people in Tripura make with a name change after divorce

Paper

  • Using the lawyer's photocopy instead of a certified copy of the decree
  • Affidavit that says "adopting" a maiden name instead of "resuming" it
  • Relationship line still reading "wife of"
  • Maiden name spelt differently from the old school certificate

Process

  • Trying the decree alone at the bank, then the passport office, then giving up
  • Changing the children's surname on the parent's Gazette
  • Updating the bank before Aadhaar and PAN
  • Forgetting to remove the spouse name from the passport at the same re-issue

Central Gazette after a divorce in Tripura

A decree dissolves a marriage. It does not, by itself, state what you are now called, and that gap is where most post-divorce paperwork gets stuck. Some offices accept the decree for a reversion to a maiden name and others do not, which leaves you arguing the same point in a dozen places. A Central Gazette notice ends that: published by the Government of India in Part IV of the Gazette of India, it states the name you now use and is read the same way everywhere.

Divorce and name change terms, explained

A short glossary, so nothing on this page needs looking up.

Central Gazette
The Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, Delhi. It is accepted in every office in India, including every office in Tripura, and by foreign missions.
Part IV
The section of the Gazette of India that carries notices from private people rather than from the Government. A personal name change appears here and nowhere else.
Decree of divorce
The court order dissolving a marriage. Many decrees say nothing about the name afterwards, which is why offices ask for more.
Maiden name
The name a woman held before marriage. A marksheet or degree in a maiden name is normal and is explained by the marriage certificate rather than corrected.
Affidavit
A written statement you swear is true before a notary. For a name change it records your old name, your new name, your parent's or husband's name, your address and the reason.
Proforma
The typed page that becomes your Gazette notice. It is filed in two identical copies, signed in your existing old name, and witnessed by two people.
Guardian consent
The written agreement of both parents, or of a single parent with the prescribed annexure, required before a child's name is changed on any record.
Minor fee
The lower Government fee charged when a Gazette notice is filed for a person under eighteen, commonly Rs 1,700 against Rs 1,100 for an adult.
Newspaper notice
The same wording published in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura. The complete original page of each is kept, because a cutting is refused.
CD certificate
A signed page declaring that the soft copy and the hard copy of your notice carry the same matter, that you are responsible for any mismatch and for the quality of the CD, and that the file is in MS Word format.
Notary public
A person authorised by the Government to witness signatures and certify documents. Notarisation is done in person in Tripura and is the one step that cannot be completed online.
Department of Publication
The office of the Government of India that publishes the Gazette, at Civil Lines behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station. It is the only office in the country that accepts a personal name change file.

Name change after divorce in Tripura, the questions people search

Is the divorce decree enough to change my name back?

It is the reason document, and some offices accept it with an affidavit, but banks, PAN and the passport office usually want the Gazette. Doing the Gazette route once avoids the argument at every counter.

Do I have to change my name after divorce?

No. Keeping the married name is legal and needs no paperwork. Changing it is your choice.

Can a man change his name after divorce?

Yes, the same route. It is rarer, but a husband who took a joint or spousal surname reverts the same way, with the decree attached.

Can I take a completely new name instead of my maiden name?

Yes. The affidavit says "changed my name from [married name] to [new name]", the decree is attached as the reason, and the Gazette route is the same.

Does my ST or caste certificate change?

No. Community status follows birth. If your name is reverting, the certificate is corrected to the restored name through e-District Tripura.

What happens to my children's surname?

Nothing automatically. A minor's surname change is a separate Gazette application with both parents' consent or a custody order; see child surname change after divorce.

Where do I read each case in detail?

Reverting to your maiden name covers the affidavit wording and the old-spelling rule; child surname change after divorce covers consent, custody orders, the birth certificate and the child's passport.

Name change after divorce in Tripura, frequently asked questions

How do I change my name after divorce in Tripura?+
Get a certified copy of the decree, sign an affidavit stating that you are resuming your name before marriage, publish in one Bengali and one English daily, and file the Central Gazette with the decree attached. Then update Aadhaar, PAN, bank and passport in order.
Is the divorce decree enough on its own?+
No. It proves the divorce and is the reason document, but it does not record a new name. PAN, banks and the passport office expect the Gazette for the name change itself.
Do I have to go back to my maiden name?+
No. You may keep the married name with no paperwork, revert to your maiden name, or take a new name. The last two use the Gazette route.
What does the affidavit say after divorce?+
Your married name as on Aadhaar, "daughter of" your father, the decree's date, case number and court, that you are resuming your name before marriage, and the "one and the same person" line. You sign in the married name.
Which court gives the certified copy in Tripura?+
The court that passed the decree: the Family Court at Agartala or the District Judge's court in your district, through its copying section, on application with the case number.
Do I need a lawyer or a court petition for the name change?+
No. The name change is an administrative process: affidavit, newspapers, Gazette. The decree you already hold is the only court document involved.
How much does it cost?+
The certified copy fee, stamp paper and notary Rs 100 to Rs 500, two newspapers Rs 800 to Rs 4,000, and the Central Gazette fee, commonly Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh, revised each financial year. Our charge is a separate line.
How long does it take?+
About a week for the affidavit and newspapers, 30 to 45 days for the Gazette, then 3 to 8 weeks of document updates. Around three months from the certified decree to the passport re-issue.
How does the passport work after divorce?+
One re-issue at PSK Agartala does two things: the decree removes the spouse name, and the Gazette with the newspaper pages and affidavit changes your own name. Run the Document Advisor on Passport Seva for your case first.
What spelling do I use for my maiden name?+
The spelling on your old records, such as your Class 10 certificate or old voter ID, so the restored name links to them. Check before typing the affidavit.
Will my children's surname change too?+
No. A minor's surname change is a separate Gazette application at the minor fee, with both parents' consent or a custody or guardianship order where one parent applies alone.
Can a man change his name after divorce?+
Yes, by the same route with the decree attached.
Do you handle this discreetly?+
Yes. One advisor, one file, no questions beyond what the paperwork needs. Your documents go nowhere outside your case.
