Name Change in Voter ID in Tripura
The voter ID is the cheapest record to correct after a name change and the one most people leave until last. It is done on Form 8, the Election Commission's application for correction of entries, free of cost, from your phone on the Voters' Service Portal or the Voter Helpline app, or on paper through your Booth Level Officer. What you upload depends on the case: the Gazette for a change of name, a document that already carries the right spelling for a slip, the marriage certificate for a surname. This page gives you the routing, the form screens, the BLO and ERO route, the replacement EPIC rule, and where this sits in the update order.
To change your name on the voter ID in Tripura, log in at the Voters' Service Portal or the Voter Helpline app, open Form 8, choose correction of entries and tick name, type the name exactly as your proof shows it, and upload the Gazette for a change of name or any document with the correct spelling for a slip. Save the reference number. The Booth Level Officer checks it, the Electoral Registration Officer approves, and a replacement EPIC is issued free; the old card is returned.

Key takeaways
- Form 8 covers everything: a spelling correction, a full change of name, a shift of address, and a replacement card. One form, several tick boxes.
- It is free. Anyone charging you for a voter ID correction in Tripura is charging for typing.
- Do Aadhaar first. The form asks for the Aadhaar number for authentication, and the BLO reads your documents against each other.
- A change of name needs the Gazette; a slip needs only a document that already spells it correctly.
- Approval brings a replacement EPIC, and the old card must be returned to the ERO. Keep it until then.
- The BLO is a real person at your booth. When the online form stalls, that is the door, not a helpline.
Voter ID name correction or name change: which case is yours
| Case | Proof to upload | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| Spelling slip: Debbarma written as Deb Barma | Aadhaar, passport, PAN, driving licence or a marksheet with the right spelling | No |
| Initial to be expanded, or the order of the name wrong | Any document showing the full name in the wanted order | No |
| Surname after marriage | Marriage certificate, with the updated Aadhaar | No |
| A different name for any other reason | Gazette of India, Part IV page | Yes |
| Maiden name back after divorce | Decree, usually with the Gazette | Often |
| Father's or husband's name wrong on the roll | That person's Aadhaar or the relevant certificate | No |
The routing is the same one that governs Aadhaar: if a document you hold already shows the name you want, it is a correction; if none does, it is a change and the Gazette is the document that will. The Gazette route from Tripura is on Gazette name change in Tripura.
What Form 8 covers, and what it does not
Form 8 is for
- Correction of entries: name, father's or husband's name, date of birth, gender, photograph, address details
- Shifting of residence within or outside the constituency
- Issue of a replacement EPIC without correction
- Marking as a person with disability
Form 8 is not for
- First-time registration; that is Form 6
- Objection to another person's entry
- Deleting a name from the roll
- Changing anything for a person who is not on the roll at all
The form asks for your EPIC number and your Aadhaar number, the Aadhaar being used for authentication of the entries; if you do not have one, that is declared on the form instead.
The online route for a voter ID name change, screen by screen
| Screen | What you do | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Log in | Voters' Service Portal or the Voter Helpline app, with your mobile, email or EPIC number and an OTP | Use the mobile you can receive the OTP on today |
| 2. Open Form 8 | Choose Form 8 and then whether the application is for yourself or another elector | Self, in almost every case |
| 3. Choose the purpose | Correction of entries; then tick name | Tick only what changes; several fields can be ticked together |
| 4. Enter the correct name | Exactly as the proof spells it, in English and in the regional language field where shown | The Bengali field matters in Tripura; keep the two consistent |
| 5. Upload the proof | Gazette page, or the document with the right spelling; clear scan | One document is usually enough |
| 6. Submit and save the reference | Reference number shown and messaged; track with it | Note it before closing the page |

The BLO and ERO route in Tripura
Every polling booth has a Booth Level Officer, usually a teacher or an Anganwadi worker from your own locality, who holds Form 8 in paper and carries applications to the Electoral Registration Officer of the assembly constituency. That is the route when the portal will not take your upload, when you have no smartphone, or when a correction has sat without movement. Fill the form, attach a self-attested copy of the proof, and get an acknowledgement. During a special summary revision the BLO also visits house to house, which is the easiest moment of the year to get a correction in. Outside a revision period the application goes to the ERO directly.
Voter ID after marriage: name and address in the same form
A bride usually needs two things at once: the surname changed and the address shifted to the marital home. Form 8 does both, and shifting within or outside the constituency is one of its purposes, so tick correction of entries for the name and shifting of residence for the address in the same application, with the marriage certificate and an address proof. Where the marital home is in another assembly constituency, the entry moves to that roll. Doing them together saves a second visit from the BLO. The bride journey in full is on name change after marriage in Tripura; the voter ID step is on voter ID name change after marriage, and the form itself on the Form 8 guide.
The replacement EPIC and what happens to your old card
When the ERO approves a correction of entries, a shift of residence or a replacement request, a new EPIC is issued and the old one is to be returned to the Electoral Registration Officer. That is in the form's own guidelines, and it is the part applicants skip. Keep the old card until the new one is in hand, then hand it in; a stale card in circulation is what causes the "two voter IDs" question later. The e-EPIC, a digital copy of the card, is downloaded from the portal once the correction is published, and is accepted as identity by most offices in Tripura.
Where the voter ID sits in the update order
| Order | Record | Why here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar | Everything else reads it |
| 2 | PAN | Linked to Aadhaar by name |
| 3 | Bank | Reads both |
| 4 | Passport | Needs two IDs already in the new name |
| 5 | Voter ID | Free and unhurried; can be done any time after Aadhaar, and counts as one of the two IDs for the passport if it is done early |
| 6 | Driving licence, e-District certificates, ration card, school and employer records | The rest |
The voter ID is the one update with no deadline pressure, which is exactly why it gets forgotten and then turns up as a mismatch at a police verification or a job check.
What a voter ID name change costs in Tripura
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Form 8 correction of entries | Free |
| Replacement EPIC after approval | Free |
| e-EPIC download | Free |
| Gazette, only for a change of name | Commonly Rs 1,100 adult, revised each financial year, on BharatKosh |
| Our service charge | None for the voter ID step; the Gazette service where a change needs it |
Gazette stage fees are on time, fees and rejection reasons; packages on the services page.
If a voter ID name correction is rejected in Tripura
| Reason | Fix |
|---|---|
| Proof does not show the name applied for | Upload a document that spells it exactly as requested; for a change, the Gazette |
| BLO could not verify at the address | Be available, or apply through the BLO with an address proof; a shift of residence may be the real fix |
| Elector not found on the roll | Check the entry on the portal; a person not on the roll registers with Form 6 instead |
| Aadhaar not furnished or not matching | Correct Aadhaar first, then reapply; see name mismatch |
| Application filed during a period when the roll is frozen | Refile after the revision publishes; the BLO can say when |
Refiling is free, so a rejection costs time, not money. The reference number tells you the reason on the portal.
Voter ID name change mistakes made in Tripura
The application
- Filing Form 6 instead of Form 8 and creating a second entry
- Ticking fields that do not change
- English and Bengali fields spelt differently
- Paying an agent for a free service
After
- Not saving the reference number

Central Gazette behind a voter ID name change
Form 8 is free and the electoral roll is easy to correct, which hides a small difficulty: the form asks you to upload proof of the name you are applying for. A spelling slip has proof lying in your drawer. A change of name has none, because no office has yet recorded the new name anywhere. The Central Gazette creates that record. It is a notice published by the Government of India in Part IV of the Gazette of India, and it is what a Booth Level Officer and an Electoral Registration Officer can act on.
When the Central Gazette is the answer
| Your situation | Why the Gazette is what works |
|---|---|
| You are applying for a name no document of yours shows | The upload box has nothing to receive without it |
| Your roll entry, Aadhaar and PAN are in different names | One notice supports the correction of each in turn |
| The BLO has asked what document supports the new name | A published page ends that conversation |
| You changed your name as an adult | No school or family record can evidence it |
| You are fixing the family surname spelling on the roll | Each member publishes once, then each Form 8 is straightforward |
The four papers in a Gazette file, and the two newspaper notices
People imagine the Gazette is one form. It is four signed papers and two printed notices, and a file missing any one of them waits at the counter instead of going forward. This is the whole set, in the order it is prepared.
| Step | The paper | What it says and who signs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Affidavit | On non-judicial stamp paper, notarised in person in Tripura. It names you, your father's or husband's name and your full address, declares that you have changed your name from the old one to the new one, and ends with a verification stating the place and the date. You sign as the deponent twice, once under the declaration and once under the verification. |
| 2 | Newspaper notices | The same wording published in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura. Keep the complete original page of each, with the masthead and the date visible; a cutting is refused. |
| 3 | CD certificate | A separate signed declaration that the matter on the CD and in the hard copy is the same, that you are responsible for any mismatch and for the quality of the CD, and that the CD is in MS Word format. Most applicants have never heard of this one, and its absence is a common reason a file is returned. |
| 4 | Request letter | Addressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, saying that all formalities for publishing in the Gazette have been completed and that the necessary documents are enclosed, signed by you with your address. |
| 5 | The proforma, in two copies | The notice itself, in the Department's own wording: I, hitherto known as the old name, of the stated address, have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as the new name, with the line certifying that other legal requirements have been complied with. It is signed in your existing old name, and carries two witnesses, each giving a signature, a full name and an address. |
Two details cost people weeks. The proforma is signed in the old name, because that is the person making the declaration, and both witnesses must write out a full address rather than initials. We prepare all five items, check the wording against the affidavit, and lodge the file ourselves.
What the papers actually say
The wording is fixed, and that is a good thing: you are not drafting anything, only filling it in. This is the shape of it.
The proforma, the page the Gazette prints
No. ADVT IV /
I, hitherto known as [OLD NAME], son of / daughter of / wife of [FATHER'S OR HUSBAND'S NAME], residing at [HOUSE, LOCALITY, TOWN, DISTRICT, TRIPURA, PIN], have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as [NEW NAME].
It is certified that I have complied with other legal requirements in this connection.
[OLD NAME]
(Signature in existing old name)
WITNESS NO. 1 Signature: Full Name: Address:
WITNESS NO. 2 Signature: Full Name: Address:
Every paper in the file, with wording you can read before you commit to anything, is on the proforma format page. We prepare the whole set so the proforma, the affidavit and both newspaper notices say exactly the same thing.
How we file it while you stay in Tripura
These files are accepted only at the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, and our head office in Delhi lodges yours in person. Voters anywhere in Tripura stay where they are. Your two local steps are the affidavit, sworn before a notary face to face, and the notices in one Bengali daily and one English daily with identical wording, each kept as a complete original page.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| What you pay the Government | Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor, on BharatKosh only; it is not refundable and it is revised every financial year, so the figure is checked the day we file |
| What you pay us | Quoted as its own line before you spend anything, so you always see the two numbers apart |
| Papers signed by you | The prescribed form in two copies, an undertaking and a request letter to the Controller of Publications |
| Papers you supply | Identity of yourself and one witness, two passport photographs, and the full original page of each newspaper |
| Time | Publication in Part IV commonly 30 to 45 days after filing |
| The copy you keep | Downloaded free from egazette.gov.in, digital since October 2015, never expiring and needing no stamp or attestation |
The whole route is set out on Gazette name change in Tripura, the stage timings and the reasons files get rejected on time, fees and rejection reasons, and getting your published page on how to check status and download your copy. The voter ID step itself stays free; only the Gazette, where you truly need it, is chargeable work. Call 9540005026 or send your documents on WhatsApp, and we will tell you honestly whether you need the Gazette at all.
Voter roll and Gazette words, explained
Words you will meet at a counter, in one place.
- Gazette notification
- A formal announcement printed in the official journal of the Government. For a name change it is the document Aadhaar, PAN, passport offices, banks and employers accept as proof that the change was made.
- Central Gazette
- The Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, Delhi. It is accepted in every office in India, including every office in Tripura, and by foreign missions.
- Part IV
- The section of the Gazette of India that carries notices from private people rather than from the Government. A personal name change appears here and nowhere else.
- Form 8
- The Election Commission application used to correct entries on the electoral roll, shift residence, obtain a replacement elector card or record a disability. It is free.
- Booth Level Officer
- The official for your polling booth, usually a teacher or Anganwadi worker from the locality, who verifies an electoral roll application and carries it to the Electoral Registration Officer.
- e-EPIC
- The digital copy of an elector photo identity card, downloaded free from the Voters' Service Portal after a correction is published.
- Proforma
- The typed page that becomes your Gazette notice. It is filed in two identical copies, signed in your existing old name, and witnessed by two people.
- Affidavit
- A written statement you swear is true before a notary. For a name change it records your old name, your new name, your parent's or husband's name, your address and the reason.
- Newspaper notice
- The same wording published in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura. The complete original page of each is kept, because a cutting is refused.
- CD certificate
- A signed page declaring that the soft copy and the hard copy of your notice carry the same matter, that you are responsible for any mismatch and for the quality of the CD, and that the file is in MS Word format.
- Community surname spelling
- Bengali and Kokborok names commonly have more than one accepted English spelling, such as Debbarma and Deb Barma. Records that use different forms do not match for a verifying officer.
- Correction against change
- A correction brings a record into line with what was already written elsewhere. A change records a name nobody has recorded before. The two need different documents and different wording.
