Name Change in Khowai Town and District, Tripura
Khowai is a town, a sub-division and a district, and it has not always been all three. That makes older documents from here read oddly: the address can say Khowai while the district line says West Tripura. Both are right. This page sorts out which Khowai a paper means, and what that does and does not affect.
If an older paper gives your address as Khowai but names West Tripura as the district, nothing is wrong. Khowai district was created in 2012, and before that Khowai was a sub-division of West Tripura. Neither version needs correcting. Khowai town is now the district headquarters, so certificates are local, and the Gazette file goes to Delhi from anywhere.

Key takeaways
- Khowai names a town, a sub-division and a district.
- Before 2012 the district here was West Tripura.
- An address saying Khowai never proved the district.
- Teliamura was part of the same sub-division until 2006.
- None of this needs correcting on old papers.
- No Gazette counter exists here or anywhere in the state.
Which Khowai is which
Elsewhere in Tripura a district and its headquarters have different names, so nobody confuses the two. Here they do not. Khowai is the town, Khowai is the sub-division, and since 2012 Khowai is also the district, which was carved out of West Tripura.
| Period | Khowai meant | District was |
|---|---|---|
| Before 2006 | The town, and one large sub-division | West Tripura |
| 2006 to 2012 | The town, and a smaller sub-division | West Tripura |
| Since 2012 | The town, the sub-division and the district | Khowai |
| What split in 2006 | Teliamura became a separate sub-division | |
| What changed in 2012 | Khowai district was created out of West Tripura | |
The undivided Khowai sub-division was once among the largest in the state, which is why the name carries so much history for a place of this size.
Reading an older document
Because the town name stayed constant while the district changed underneath it, papers from here can look contradictory at a glance. They are not.
| What the paper shows | What it means |
|---|---|
| Khowai in the address, West Tripura as district | Issued before 2012. Entirely correct |
| Khowai in the address, Khowai as district | Issued since 2012 |
| Khowai sub-division named | Could be either period. Check the date |
| Teliamura named separately | Issued after the 2006 split |
| Two of your papers disagree | Normal. They were issued in different periods |
| Anything needs correcting? | No. Not on this point |
Teliamura, and the 2006 split
Khowai district has two sub-divisions, Khowai and Teliamura. They were one until 2006, when the undivided sub-division was split in two. So families with roots on the Teliamura side have papers that name Khowai even though nobody there would describe themselves as being in Khowai today.
If your family is from that side
- Older papers may name the Khowai sub-division
- Papers after 2006 name Teliamura
- Papers before 2012 name West Tripura as district
- None of it is an error
What to do about it
- Nothing, on the place names
- Check the spelling of the person's name instead
- Use your current address on new forms
- Keep the old document as it is
Both sub-divisions sit in the same district now, and Khowai town is the headquarters for both.
What is local to Khowai
Since 2012 the district's main offices have been in Khowai town rather than in Agartala, which is the practical gain from the reorganisation for people here.

| Paying the Gazette fee | Online, from home |
We do not print office addresses or sitting days, because those change and a wrong address costs a journey. Ring first, even locally.

The affidavit, locally
An affidavit is sworn rather than filled in, so you appear before a notary in person and sign in front of them. Notaries are found around court areas, and this is the one part of a name change that nobody can do for you.

- The exact old and new spellings, written down
- Your address as you want it printed
- Both parents, if the affidavit is for a child

- The exact spelling you are moving to
- How your father's or husband's name is written
- Whether a surname is one word or two
- Which district to state, which is Khowai today
The format is on name change affidavit in Tripura.

Where the Gazette fits, from Khowai
There is no Gazette counter in Khowai, in Agartala, or anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to one office in Delhi, so proximity to the capital makes no difference at this step at all. Anybody locally offering to file a Central Gazette notice within the state is describing something that does not exist, though preparing papers and sending them to Delhi is legitimate work.
What goes into the file
A Central Gazette file is five papers and the Department accepts or returns it as a whole. Nothing is returned afterwards, so it is assembled once and assembled properly.
| Paper | What it must say or be |
|---|---|
| 1. The affidavit | On non-judicial stamp paper, notarised in person, giving the old name, the new name, the address and the reason. The one step nobody can do online |
| 2. Two newspaper pages | One Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, identical wording, and the complete original page of each with masthead and date. A cutting is refused |
| 3. The CD certificate | A declaration that the soft copy matches the hard copy, accepting responsibility for any mismatch. The most commonly forgotten paper in the file |
| 4. The request letter | Addressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054 |
| 5. The proforma, in two copies | Computer typed, not handwritten, signed in the existing old name, with two witnesses giving signature, full name and full address |
What the notice actually says
Change of name style
No. ADVT IV /
I, [existing name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Khowai, Khowai District, Tripura, PIN], hitherto known as [existing name], have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as [new name].
[Signed in the existing old name] • Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address
Correction style, where a record carries a wrong version
No. ADVT IV /
PUBLIC NOTICE
It is for general information that I, [your full name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Khowai, Khowai District, Tripura, PIN], do hereby declare that my name has been wrongly written as [the wrong version, quoted exactly as printed] in my [name the record, with number and year], whereas my actual and correct name is [the correct version]. Both the said names refer to one and the same person, namely myself.
[Signature in your existing name] • Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address
Three details decide acceptance. A wrong version is quoted exactly as printed, spacing and punctuation included, and never tidied. Where several records carry it, each is named in turn with its own wrong version. And the proforma is computer typed in two copies, signed in the existing old name, with both witnesses giving a full address. Every variant is on the proforma format page.
The stages, and how it is filed from Khowai
Only one office in India accepts a personal name change file, the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, and there is no counter in Agartala or Khowai. Our Delhi head office lodges it in person. The local part stays here: the affidavit sworn before a notary in Khowai, and both newspaper notices booked together so the file is not waiting on one of them. The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid on BharatKosh only, non-refundable and revised each financial year, with our service charge always given as a separate line before anything is paid. Publication appears in Part IV commonly 30 to 45 days after filing, on a weekly release cycle, and the copy is a free PDF from egazette.gov.in that never expires and needs no attestation for use in India. The full route is on Gazette name change in Tripura.
What to write on a form today
Since the same word can mean three things, forms from here are easier to fill in if you give each field what it is actually asking for.
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Town | Khowai, or Teliamura, as applicable |
| Sub-division | Khowai or Teliamura |
| District | Khowai |
| State | Tripura |
| On the Gazette notice | Your full current address, district included |
| On an old document | Leave it exactly as it is |
Writing the district out in full on the notice is worth the extra words here, because it removes the ambiguity for anyone reading it later.
