Name Change in Kailashahar, Unakoti District

Nobody in Kailashahar moved house in 2012, and yet the district on your documents changed. Papers issued up to that January say North Tripura and everything since says Unakoti. The town also became a district headquarters on the same date, which means a journey many families still make out of habit stopped being necessary fourteen years ago.

Quick answer

If your older documents say North Tripura and your newer ones say Unakoti, nothing is wrong and nothing needs correcting. Kailashahar is now a district headquarters, so revenue certificates and most office work happen here rather than in Dharmanagar or Agartala. The affidavit is sworn locally, and the Gazette file goes to Delhi from anywhere in India.

Key takeaways

  • A North Tripura and Unakoti split across your papers is normal.
  • Do not have an older document reissued to say Unakoti.
  • Kailashahar gained district offices in 2012. Use them.
  • The old trip to Dharmanagar is usually unnecessary now.
  • The affidavit is the one compulsory local appearance.
  • No Gazette counter exists here or anywhere in the state.

The document split

Name change services in Kailashahar, Unakoti district, Tripura
One date, and a family's papers divide neatly either side of it.

On 21 January 2012 Tripura reorganised four districts into eight, and Unakoti was created out of North Tripura with Kailashahar as its headquarters. For people here that produces the sharpest before and after divide anywhere in the state, because nobody moved and yet everything issued after that date names a different district.

Dharmanagar residents see the reverse of this: their district kept its name and simply became smaller, which is set out on name change in Dharmanagar.

Why neither version is wrong

Each document recorded the district as it stood on the day it was made. A district being created does not make earlier records inaccurate, any more than a road being renamed makes an old letter wrong.

Do not try to have an older certificate reissued as Unakoti. It would be historically wrong, offices are unlikely to do it, and you would be spending effort creating a problem rather than solving one. Where something needs explaining, explain it; that is cheaper and it is also accurate.

The offices Kailashahar gained

Before 2012, district level work for this area meant Dharmanagar. Since then Kailashahar has been a headquarters in its own right, and yet plenty of families still set off north out of habit, or because an older relative remembers it that way.

We do not print office addresses or sitting days, because those change and a wrong address costs a journey. Ring first, even locally.

The affidavit, locally

An affidavit is sworn rather than filled in, so you appear before a notary in person and sign in front of them. Notaries are found around court areas, and this is the one part of a name change that nobody can do for you.

Take with you

  • Identity proof in your existing name
  • The exact old and new spellings, written down
  • Your address as you want it printed
  • Both parents, if the affidavit is for a child

Decide beforehand

  • The exact spelling you are moving to
  • How your father's or husband's name is written
  • Whether a surname is one word or two
  • Which district to state, which is Unakoti today

Where the Gazette fits, from Kailashahar

There is no Gazette counter in Kailashahar, in Dharmanagar, in Agartala, or anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to one office in Delhi, so this is the step where being in Unakoti costs you nothing whatever. Anybody locally offering to file a Central Gazette notice within the state is describing something that does not exist, though preparing papers and sending them to Delhi is legitimate work.

What goes into the file

A Central Gazette file is five papers and the Department accepts or returns it as a whole. Nothing is returned afterwards, so it is assembled once and assembled properly.

The five papers in a Central Gazette file
PaperWhat it must say or be
1. The affidavitOn non-judicial stamp paper, notarised in person, giving the old name, the new name, the address and the reason. The one step nobody can do online
2. Two newspaper pagesOne Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, identical wording, and the complete original page of each with masthead and date. A cutting is refused
3. The CD certificateA declaration that the soft copy matches the hard copy, accepting responsibility for any mismatch. The most commonly forgotten paper in the file
4. The request letterAddressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054
5. The proforma, in two copiesComputer typed, not handwritten, signed in the existing old name, with two witnesses giving signature, full name and full address

What the notice actually says

Change of name style

No. ADVT IV /

I, [existing name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Kailashahar, Unakoti, Tripura, PIN], hitherto known as [existing name], have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as [new name].

[Signed in the existing old name]  •  Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address

Correction style, where a record carries a wrong version

No. ADVT IV /

PUBLIC NOTICE

It is for general information that I, [your full name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Kailashahar, Unakoti, Tripura, PIN], do hereby declare that my name has been wrongly written as [the wrong version, quoted exactly as printed] in my [name the record, with number and year], whereas my actual and correct name is [the correct version]. Both the said names refer to one and the same person, namely myself.

[Signature in your existing name]  •  Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address

Three details decide acceptance. A wrong version is quoted exactly as printed, spacing and punctuation included, and never tidied. Where several records carry it, each is named in turn with its own wrong version. And the proforma is computer typed in two copies, signed in the existing old name, with both witnesses giving a full address. Use Unakoti, your present district, in the address. Every variant is on the proforma format page.

The stages, and how it is filed from Kailashahar

Only one office in India accepts a personal name change file, the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, and there is no counter in Agartala or Kailashahar. Our Delhi head office lodges it in person. The local part stays in Unakoti: the affidavit sworn before a notary here, and both newspaper notices booked together so the file is not waiting on one of them. The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid on BharatKosh only, non-refundable and revised each financial year, with our service charge always given as a separate line before anything is paid. Publication appears in Part IV commonly 30 to 45 days after filing, on a weekly release cycle, and the copy is a free PDF from egazette.gov.in that never expires and needs no attestation for use in India. The full route is on Gazette name change in Tripura.

Kumarghat, Pecharthal and the blocks

Unakoti is the smallest district in the state by population, and for people outside the headquarters the question is the familiar one: what can be done at your own sub-division, and what means coming in to Kailashahar.

Before you travel

  • Ask whether your sub-division can do it
  • Ask what documents to bring
  • Check the officer is sitting that day
  • Bring originals as well as copies

If you live in a council area

  • The Village Committee holds local records
  • That matters most for birth certificates
  • Confirm which body issued yours
  • Ask there before applying elsewhere

The birth certificate routing is on birth certificate name correction in Tripura.

Kailashahar and Unakoti, frequently asked questions

My old papers say North Tripura and my new ones say Unakoti.+
Neither is wrong. On 21 January 2012 Unakoti was created out of North Tripura with Kailashahar as its headquarters. Nobody moved house, but everything issued after that date names a different district. Each document recorded the district as it stood on the day it was made.
Should I get an older certificate reissued as Unakoti?+
No. It would be historically wrong, offices are unlikely to do it, and you would be spending effort creating a problem rather than solving one. Where something needs explaining at a counter, explain it. That is cheaper and it is also accurate.
Which district do I write on a form now?+
The current one, Unakoti, including in the Gazette notice and on the affidavit. Let older documents say what they have always said, and use your present address as it stands today.
Do I still need to go to Dharmanagar?+
Usually not. Before 2012, district level work for this area meant Dharmanagar, and plenty of families still set off north out of habit or because an older relative remembers it that way. Kailashahar has been a headquarters in its own right since then. Check before travelling.
What is still not available locally?+
Passport work, which means the Seva Kendra at Agartala or a POPSK where one serves the area, and board or university corrections, which go through the institution that issued the record wherever you live. Almost everything else is here.
Is there a Gazette counter in Kailashahar?+
No, and there is none in Dharmanagar, Agartala or anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to a single office in Delhi, so this is the step where being in Unakoti costs you nothing whatever. Anybody offering to file one locally is describing something that does not exist.
An officer queried the district difference.+
Explain the 2012 reorganisation, which is well known here. Expect more questions if you are applying outside Tripura, since officers elsewhere know the history less well. What does need attention is a difference in your name or in the village or town name, since those can be genuine errors.
What must I do in person?+
Swear the affidavit. It is sworn rather than filled in, so you appear before a notary, sign in front of them and have it attested. Notaries are found around court areas, and this is the one part of a name change nobody can do for you.
I live in Kumarghat or Pecharthal.+
The question is the familiar one: what can be done at your own sub-division and what means coming in to Kailashahar. Ring and ask first, because that single call decides whether you travel at all and what to bring if you do.
Does it cost more here than in Agartala?+
No. The Government fee is the same, newspaper rates belong to the papers, certificate fees are set by the department, and notary charges are broadly similar across the state. Travel is the only variable, and it is lower now than it was before 2012.
I live in a village committee area outside the town.+
Then the Village Committee holds your local records. It matters most for birth certificates, which are corrected by the body that issued them, so establish which body that is before applying anywhere else.
Why does this page not list office addresses?+
Because locations, sitting days and requirements change, and a confident wrong address costs you a journey. Ring the office before travelling, even within your own town. That habit prevents most wasted trips.

People also search for: unakoti district office kailashahar, notary kailashahar, north tripura old district, tripura new districts 2012, name change agartala, affidavit format tripura.

Who wrote and checked this page

This page is written and maintained by the Tripura Name Change documentation desk under founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, who has 5+ years of direct filing experience with the Department of Publication in Delhi, with our Tripura office at Capital Complex in Agartala. The creation of Unakoti district in January 2012 is a matter of public record. Office locations, sitting days and requirements are set locally and change, so we have described where each step belongs rather than listing addresses that would date.
