Name Change in Dharmanagar, North Tripura

Everywhere in Tripura it helps to know what can be done locally. In the far north it matters more, because the alternative is the longest journey in the state. Dharmanagar also sits close to the Assam border, so families here often hold school, college and employment documents issued in another state, which changes a few things worth knowing before you start.

Quick answer

Dharmanagar is a district headquarters, so revenue certificates and most office work happen here rather than in Agartala. The affidavit is sworn locally before a notary. The Gazette file goes to Delhi from anywhere. If you studied or worked in Assam, your records from there follow that institution's own process, and that is usually the slow part rather than the Tripura side.

Key takeaways

  • Being a headquarters town saves you the longest trip in Tripura.
  • North Tripura kept its name but lost the Unakoti side in 2012.
  • Cross-border documents follow the issuing state's process.
  • The affidavit is the one compulsory local appearance.
  • The Gazette is filed in Delhi, so distance is irrelevant to it.
  • Start anything involving a board or university first.

Why distance matters more here

Name change services in Dharmanagar, North Tripura
The far north, where a wasted trip costs a day.

From Bishalgarh or Mohanpur, a trip to Agartala is an inconvenience. From Dharmanagar it is a serious undertaking, and that changes how this job should be planned rather than what it requires.

How distance changes the planning
PrincipleWhy it matters here
Ring before travellingA wasted journey costs a day, not an hour
Combine errandsOne trip should clear several items
Use what is local firstMore is available in Dharmanagar than people assume
Start slow items earlyBoard and university work is slow wherever you live
Do not travel for the GazetteThere is nothing in Tripura to travel to
Send scans firstMost problems are visible before anybody moves
The single most valuable habit in the north is a phone call. Ask what the office wants, whether the officer is sitting, and whether the thing can be done at your own sub-division. That call is worth more than any general advice on this page.

What is local to Dharmanagar

North Tripura's main offices are here, which is the reason most residents never need to go south at all for a name change.

What each step actually involves is on the name change process page, which this page does not repeat.

What 2012 did to North Tripura

On 21 January 2012 Tripura reorganised four districts into eight. North Tripura kept its name, but Unakoti was carved out of it with Kailashahar as the new headquarters. So unlike Udaipur or Khowai, your district name did not change. It got smaller.

What that means for documents
SituationPosition
You have always lived in DharmanagarYour documents say North Tripura throughout. No issue
Family on the Kailashahar sideTheir older papers say North Tripura, newer ones Unakoti
You moved between the twoExpect both names across your documents
Is that an error? No. Each recorded the district as it stood
Which to write on a formThe current district for your present address
Should an old one be reissued? No. It would be historically wrong

The same pattern in the towns that did change name is on name change in Udaipur, where Gomati replaced South Tripura.

Documents from across the border

The north of Tripura looks toward Assam as much as toward Agartala, and plenty of families here have school, college or employment records issued there. That does not complicate a name change, but it does decide which office handles which record.

Where cross-border records are dealt with
RecordWho handles it
A mark sheet from an Assam boardThat board, under its own correction process
A degree from a college in AssamThat university
An employer's records thereThat employer's establishment section
Your Tripura certificatesHere, as usual
The Gazette noticeDelhi, and it serves all of them
The affidavitWherever you actually are. See below
The published notice is the piece that travels well. It is a central Government publication, permanent and verifiable online from any state, which makes it useful evidence when your records are spread across two administrations rather than one.

Where to swear the affidavit

An affidavit is sworn rather than filled in, so you appear before a notary in person. For most Dharmanagar residents that is a local errand. For students and workers living across the border it is the one question worth asking early.

If you are here

  • A notary locally, around the court area
  • Identity proof in your existing name
  • The exact old and new spellings, written out
  • Both parents, if it is for a child

If you are living away

  • Tell us where you actually are
  • Say which address you want on the notice
  • Tell us when you next visit Tripura
  • Ask before booking a trip home just for this

The format and stamp paper question are on name change affidavit in Tripura, and the position for people living outside the state on name change for NRIs and residents living outside Tripura.

The two newspapers

One Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, with identical wording. This is arranged rather than travelled for, so the north is no different from the capital.

Where the Gazette fits, from Dharmanagar

This is the step where being in the far north costs you nothing at all. There is no Gazette counter in Dharmanagar, in Agartala, or anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to one office in Delhi, so a resident of Kanchanpur and a resident of the capital are in exactly the same position. Anybody locally offering to file a Central Gazette notice in the state is describing something that does not exist, though preparing papers and sending them to Delhi is legitimate.

What goes into the file

A Central Gazette file is five papers and the Department accepts or returns it as a whole. Nothing is returned afterwards, so it is assembled once and assembled properly.

The five papers in a Central Gazette file
PaperWhat it must say or be
1. The affidavitOn non-judicial stamp paper, notarised in person, giving the old name, the new name, the address and the reason. The one step nobody can do online
2. Two newspaper pagesOne Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, identical wording, and the complete original page of each with masthead and date. A cutting is refused
3. The CD certificateA declaration that the soft copy matches the hard copy, accepting responsibility for any mismatch. The most commonly forgotten paper in the file
4. The request letterAddressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054
5. The proforma, in two copiesComputer typed, not handwritten, signed in the existing old name, with two witnesses giving signature, full name and full address

What the notice actually says

Change of name style

No. ADVT IV /

I, [existing name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Dharmanagar, North Tripura, PIN], hitherto known as [existing name], have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as [new name].

[Signed in the existing old name]  •  Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address

Correction style, where a record carries a wrong version

No. ADVT IV /

PUBLIC NOTICE

It is for general information that I, [your full name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Dharmanagar, North Tripura, PIN], do hereby declare that my name has been wrongly written as [the wrong version, quoted exactly as printed] in my [name the record, with number and year], whereas my actual and correct name is [the correct version]. Both the said names refer to one and the same person, namely myself.

[Signature in your existing name]  •  Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address

Three details decide acceptance. A wrong version is quoted exactly as printed, spacing and punctuation included, and never tidied. Where several records carry it, each is named in turn with its own wrong version. And the proforma is computer typed in two copies, signed in the existing old name, with both witnesses giving a full address. Every variant is on the proforma format page.

The stages, and how it is filed from Dharmanagar

Only one office in India accepts a personal name change file, the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, and there is no counter in Agartala or Dharmanagar. Our Delhi head office lodges it in person. The local part stays in North Tripura: the affidavit sworn before a notary here, and both newspaper notices booked together so the file is not waiting on one of them. The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid on BharatKosh only, non-refundable and revised each financial year, with our service charge always given as a separate line before anything is paid. Publication appears in Part IV commonly 30 to 45 days after filing, on a weekly release cycle, and the copy is a free PDF from egazette.gov.in that never expires and needs no attestation for use in India. The full route is on Gazette name change in Tripura.

Kanchanpur, Panisagar and the blocks

North Tripura is more than its headquarters, and for people further out the calculation is the same one in miniature: what can be done at your own sub-division, and what means coming in to Dharmanagar.

Before you travel

  • Ask whether your sub-division can do it
  • Ask what documents to bring
  • Check the officer is sitting that day
  • Bring originals as well as copies

If you live in a council area

  • The Village Committee holds local records
  • That matters most for birth certificates
  • Confirm which body issued yours
  • Ask there before applying elsewhere

The birth certificate routing is on birth certificate name correction in Tripura.

Mistakes people in the north make

About travel

  • Going to Agartala for what is available here
  • Travelling without ringing first
  • Looking for a Gazette counter in the state
  • Booking a trip home just to swear an affidavit

About documents

  • Assuming an Assam newspaper will do
  • Leaving board work in another state until last
  • Thinking a North Tripura and Unakoti difference is an error
  • Not settling the spelling before the notary

Tell us what you need

Send us scans before you plan any journey, because in the north a wasted trip costs a day. We will tell you what is available in Dharmanagar itself, what your sub-division can handle, and what genuinely needs Agartala. If some of your records were issued in Assam, tell us early, since those follow that institution's own process and are usually the slowest part of the whole job.

Dharmanagar and North Tripura, frequently asked questions

Do I have to travel to Agartala for a name change?+
For most of it, no. Dharmanagar is a district headquarters, so North Tripura's main offices are here and revenue certificates and most office work happen locally. The affidavit is sworn here too. The main reason to go south is passport work.
Is there a Gazette counter anywhere in the north?+
No, and there is none anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to a single office in Delhi, so a resident of Kanchanpur and a resident of the capital are in exactly the same position. Anybody offering to file a Central Gazette notice locally is describing something that does not exist.
Why does distance matter more here?+
Because a wasted journey costs a day rather than an hour. That does not change what the job requires, only how it should be planned: ring before travelling, combine errands into one trip, use what is local first, and send scans before anybody moves.
Did my district change in 2012?+
The name did not. On 21 January 2012 Tripura reorganised four districts into eight, and Unakoti was carved out of North Tripura with Kailashahar as its headquarters. So North Tripura kept its name but got smaller, which is different from Udaipur or Khowai where the district name itself changed.
My family's papers say North Tripura and Unakoti in different places.+
That is normal if any of you are from the Kailashahar side or moved between the two. Each document recorded the district as it stood when it was made, and neither is an error. Write the current district for your present address on forms, and do not try to have an old certificate reissued.
My mark sheet is from a board in Assam.+
Then that board corrects it under its own process, not the Tripura board. The same goes for a degree from a college in Assam or records with an employer there. Your Tripura certificates are handled here as usual, and the published notice serves all of them.
Can I publish the notice in an Assam newspaper?+
No. The requirement is one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, with identical wording, and the complete original page of each is submitted rather than a cutting. A paper circulating across the border is not a substitute.
I am studying or working in Silchar or Karimganj.+
Tell us early, because the affidavit is the step tied to where you actually are. Everything else is either online or arranged, and it is usually unnecessary to book a trip home purely to swear one. Say which address you want on the notice and when you next visit.
What should I start first?+
Anything involving a board or a university, wherever it is, because that is the slowest item in the chain and people habitually leave it until last. Records held in another state are slower still, since you are waiting on that institution rather than on anything in Tripura.
Does it cost more to do this from the far north?+
No. The Government fee is the same, newspaper rates belong to the papers, certificate fees are set by the department, and notary charges are broadly similar across the state. The only variable is travel, and being in a headquarters town keeps that down.
I live in a village committee area outside the town.+
Then the Village Committee holds your local records. It matters most for birth certificates, which are corrected by the body that issued them, so establish which body that is before applying anywhere else.
Why does this page not give office addresses?+
Because locations, sitting days and requirements change, and in the north a confident wrong address costs you a day. Ring the office before travelling, even within Dharmanagar. That habit prevents most wasted journeys.
