When your records drift apart

Name Change in Melaghar, Sepahijala District

Melaghar sits in the Sonamura sub-division, so where you go for an office is already answered. The problem people here actually bring us is different. If you spend part of the year working away from home, employers, banks and offices in other places each write your name their own way, and those versions drift apart until something important gets refused.

Quick answer

If your name appears differently across records collected in different places, first decide whether you need a correction or a change, because they take different routes. Where the versions belong to one person and always did, a one and the same person affidavit usually settles it. Melaghar's offices are through the Sonamura sub-division, and the Gazette is filed in Delhi.

How records drift apart

Name change services in Melaghar, Sepahijala district, Tripura
Nobody made a mistake. Everybody wrote what they heard.

Nobody sets out to have three versions of their own name. It happens one record at a time, usually because each office wrote down what it heard rather than copying what you already had.

Where extra versions of a name come from
SituationWhat tends to happen
Work outside the stateAn employer records the name in its own spelling
A bank account opened elsewhereCopied from whatever document you carried that day
A Bengali or Kokborok name in EnglishMore than one reasonable spelling exists
Older handwritten recordsCopied differently by different clerks
A short form used dailyEnters a record as though it were the full name
When it surfacesAt a verification, a claim or a joining
It almost never surfaces at a convenient moment. Mismatches sit quietly for years and then appear when something is urgent: a job verification, a claim, an admission. Sorting it out when nothing is pending costs the same and hurts far less.

Correction or change

Before anything is paid for, work out which of two different things you are actually doing. People spend money on the wrong route more often than they spend it on the wrong provider.

The one and the same person affidavit

Where two or more versions of a name all refer to you and always did, the usual instrument is a sworn statement saying exactly that. It does not change your name. It declares that the versions belong to one person.

Picking the spelling you keep

Whatever route you take, you end up choosing one spelling and making the rest match it. Choosing well at the start saves repeat work, and the best choice is usually not the one you like most.

Favour the spelling that

  • Appears on your board or university records
  • Appears on the most documents already
  • Matches your parents' records
  • You are willing to use for life

Be careful with

  • A spelling used only by one employer
  • A short form you use socially
  • A version that exists on one card only
  • Anything you have not written down and checked

Board records are the ones hardest to change later, which is why they usually decide the answer. The transliteration cases are on Kokborok and Bengali name spelling variations.

The order to do things in from Melaghar

1

List every version

Write out each record and its spelling.

2

Decide correction or change

Before paying for anything.

3

Pick the spelling you keep

Usually the one on board records.

4

Swear the affidavit

Locally, in person, before a notary.

5

Papers and Gazette if needed

Only where it is a real change.

6

Work through the records

One at a time, each under its own process.

What each step actually involves is on the name change process page.

The affidavit, locally

An affidavit is sworn rather than filled in, so you appear before a notary in person and sign in front of them. If you work away for part of the year, plan this for a period when you are home, and tell us in advance so nothing else waits on it.

Take with you

  • Identity proof in your existing name
  • Every version, written exactly as printed
  • Your address as you want it to appear
  • Both parents, if the affidavit is for a child

Decide beforehand

  • The spelling you are keeping
  • How your father's or husband's name is written
  • Whether a surname is one word or two
  • Which records you will name in it

The format is on name change affidavit in Tripura.

The two newspapers

Where the job is a genuine change rather than a correction, the notice runs in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, with identical wording in both.

Where the Gazette fits, from Melaghar

There is no Gazette counter in Melaghar, in Sonamura, in Agartala, or anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to one office in Delhi, so where you live changes nothing at this step. It is also worth saying plainly that not every mismatch needs one: where the versions always referred to one person, the affidavit route is often enough. Anybody offering to file a Central Gazette notice within the state is describing something that does not exist.

What goes into the file

A Central Gazette file is five papers and the Department accepts or returns it as a whole. Nothing is returned afterwards, so it is assembled once and assembled properly.

The five papers in a Central Gazette file
PaperWhat it must say or be
1. The affidavitOn non-judicial stamp paper, notarised in person, giving the old name, the new name, the address and the reason. The one step nobody can do online
2. Two newspaper pagesOne Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, identical wording, and the complete original page of each with masthead and date. A cutting is refused
3. The CD certificateA declaration that the soft copy matches the hard copy, accepting responsibility for any mismatch. The most commonly forgotten paper in the file
4. The request letterAddressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054
5. The proforma, in two copiesComputer typed, not handwritten, signed in the existing old name, with two witnesses giving signature, full name and full address

What the notice actually says

Change of name style

No. ADVT IV /

I, [existing name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Melaghar, Sepahijala, Tripura, PIN], hitherto known as [existing name], have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as [new name].

[Signed in the existing old name]  •  Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address

Correction style, where a record carries a wrong version

No. ADVT IV /

PUBLIC NOTICE

It is for general information that I, [your full name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Melaghar, Sepahijala, Tripura, PIN], do hereby declare that my name has been wrongly written as [the wrong version, quoted exactly as printed] in my [name the record, with number and year], whereas my actual and correct name is [the correct version]. Both the said names refer to one and the same person, namely myself.

[Signature in your existing name]  •  Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address

Three details decide acceptance. A wrong version is quoted exactly as printed, spacing and punctuation included, and never tidied. Where several records carry it, each is named in turn with its own wrong version, which is exactly the situation this page is about. And the proforma is computer typed in two copies, signed in the existing old name, with both witnesses giving a full address. Every variant is on the proforma format page.

The stages, and how it is filed from Melaghar

Only one office in India accepts a personal name change file, the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, and there is no counter in Agartala or Melaghar. Our Delhi head office lodges it in person. The local part stays here: the affidavit sworn before a notary, and both newspaper notices booked together so the file is not waiting on one of them. The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid on BharatKosh only, non-refundable and revised each financial year, with our service charge always given as a separate line before anything is paid. Publication appears in Part IV commonly 30 to 45 days after filing, on a weekly release cycle, and the copy is a free PDF from egazette.gov.in that never expires and needs no attestation for use in India. The full route is on Gazette name change in Tripura.

Questions people in Melaghar search

My name is spelled differently in three places.

Common, and usually fixable without a Gazette.

Is an affidavit enough on its own?

It supports a correction. Each record holder still decides.

Which spelling should I keep?

Usually the one on your board records.

Do I go to Bishalgarh?

No. Sonamura is your sub-division.

Is there a Gazette office here?

No. The only one is in Delhi.

I am away most of the year.

Plan the affidavit for when you are home.

Tell us what you need

Send us a photo of every document where your name appears, including the ones that disagree. That list is what decides the route, and the route is where the money goes. If some of your records were made outside Tripura, say so, because those follow that institution's own process. If you are only home for part of the year, tell us when, so the affidavit is not what holds everything up.

Melaghar and mismatched names, frequently asked questions

My name is spelled differently in three different records.+
That is common and usually fixable. Nobody sets out to have three versions of their own name. It happens one record at a time, because each office wrote down what it heard rather than copying what you already had, and it often does not need a Gazette at all.
Is this a correction or a change?+
A correction is where a record is wrong and your name never changed. A change is where you are moving to a new name. They take different routes and cost different amounts, and people spend money on the wrong route more often than on the wrong provider, so this decision comes before anything is paid for.
What does a one and the same person affidavit do?+
It states on oath that two or more versions of a name refer to one person, and always did. What it does not do is change your name or correct a record by itself. Each record holder still applies its own process, with the affidavit as support.
How should the versions be written in it?+
Exactly as they are printed, spacing and punctuation included, and never tidied up. Where several records carry a wrong version, name each record in turn with its own version rather than describing them together.
Which spelling should I settle on?+
Usually the one on your board or university records, because those are the hardest to change later. Also favour the spelling that appears on the most documents already and matches your parents' records. Be careful of a version used by only one employer or a short form you use socially.
Why did this only surface now?+
Mismatches sit quietly for years and then appear when something is urgent, at a job verification, a claim or an admission. Sorting it out when nothing is pending costs the same and is far less stressful.
Some of my records were made outside Tripura.+
Those follow that institution's own process rather than anything here, whether it is an employer, a bank branch or a board in another state. Tell us early, because they are usually the slowest part of the job.
Can the newspaper notice run where I work?+
No. Where a notice is needed, it runs in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, with identical wording, and the complete original page of each is submitted rather than a cutting.
I am only home for part of the year.+
Plan the affidavit for a period when you are here, because it is sworn in person before a notary and nobody can do it for you. Tell us when that will be, so it is not the step that holds everything else up.
Do I go to Bishalgarh for my paperwork?+
No. Melaghar is in the Sonamura sub-division, so sub-divisional work goes to Sonamura and district level work to Bishramganj. Bishalgarh is a separate sub-division and is almost never the answer for people here.
Is there a Gazette counter nearby?+
No, and there is none in Sonamura, Agartala or anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to a single office in Delhi. It is also worth saying that not every mismatch needs one, because where the versions always referred to one person the affidavit route is often enough.
What should I send you first?+
A photo of every document where your name appears, including the ones that disagree. That list is what decides the route, and the route is where the money goes. Guessing from one or two documents is how people end up paying for a process they did not need.

This page is written and maintained by the Tripura Name Change documentation desk under founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, who has 5+ years of direct filing experience with the Department of Publication in Delhi, with our Tripura office at Capital Complex in Agartala.
