Name Change in Mohanpur, West Tripura District

Mohanpur is in West Tripura, and West Tripura's headquarters is Agartala. So your district office is the state capital, which is an advantage most of Tripura does not have. It also creates a problem the remote towns never face: when every trip feels cheap, people do the steps out of order and end up redoing work.

Quick answer

Being near Agartala helps with passport work and state offices. It changes nothing about the Gazette, which is filed in Delhi, or about board corrections and birth certificates, which belong to the institution or the body that registered them. Do the two slow steps first, settle your spelling, and the rest follows without repeat trips.

Key takeaways

  • Your district office and the state capital are the same place.
  • Proximity helps with some steps and none of the slow ones.
  • Start board corrections first, however close you live.
  • Settle the spelling before anything is sworn or printed.
  • A birth record belongs to the body that registered it.
  • No Gazette counter exists here or anywhere in the state.

What being close actually buys

Name change services in Mohanpur, West Tripura district
Near the capital, and still waiting the same 30 to 45 days.

Living near Agartala is a real advantage, but it is worth knowing exactly which steps it touches, because most of the waiting in a name change happens somewhere you cannot drive to.

What proximity changes and what it does not
StepDoes living near Agartala help?
Passport appointmentsYes, considerably
State level officesYes
District mattersYes. Your district office is there
The GazetteNo. It is filed in Delhi
Board and university recordsNo. The institution decides
Birth certificatesNo. The registering body decides
The two slowest parts of this job are immune to geography. A board correction takes as long from Mohanpur as from Kanchanpur, and the Gazette takes commonly 30 to 45 days wherever you post it from. Being close saves errands, not waiting.

The mistake convenience causes

In Dharmanagar or Kanchanpur a wasted trip costs a day, so people plan carefully and ask before they travel. Near the capital nobody plans, because each trip feels cheap. The result is a different kind of waste: work done in the wrong order and then done again.

How work gets repeated
What people doWhat it costs them
Swear the affidavit before deciding the spellingA second affidavit, and a second fee
Update Aadhaar before the GazetteUpdates that do not match the final name
Leave the board correction until lastMonths added at the end
Print the notice with an address they then changeA notice that does not match the file
Visit an office without asking firstA wasted morning, repeated
Start before listing every recordA version discovered too late

None of these are caused by distance. They are caused by starting before deciding.

The order that avoids repeat trips

Two things should happen before anything else, and both of them are decisions rather than errands. An afternoon spent on them saves several trips later.

First, list every record

  • Write out each document and its exact spelling
  • Include the ones that disagree
  • Note anything issued outside Tripura
  • Only then can the route be decided

Second, fix the spelling

  • Choose the version you will keep for life
  • Usually the one on board records
  • Write it down and do not revise it
  • Everything printed afterwards follows this

Then start the slowest item, which is any board or university correction, before the affidavit and the notices. That single sequencing decision is worth more than the proximity advantage.

Why your district never changed

Four towns in Tripura have a district name split on their papers. Mohanpur does not. In 2012 West Tripura lost territory to the new Khowai and Sepahijala districts, but it kept its name and kept Agartala as its headquarters, so your documents say West Tripura whatever their age.

Anything to explain?No
Relatives from the Khowai sideTheir older papers say West Tripura, newer ones Khowai
Relatives from Bishalgarh or SonamuraThe same, with Sepahijala
Does any of that need correcting? No
What does need checkingThe spelling of the name

The other sides of that change are on name change in Khowai and name change in Bishalgarh.

Where a birth record lives

This is the step where being near Agartala misleads people most. A birth certificate is corrected by the body that registered the birth, which for the Mohanpur area is a local body rather than anything in the capital.

Who registers a birth, and who corrects it
Where the birth was registeredWho corrects it
A local body in this areaThat body, not a capital office
A Gram Panchayat areaThat Gram Panchayat
A village committee areaThat Village Committee
A hospital in AgartalaThe body covering that hospital
Is this a Gazette job?No. It is a Registrar correction

The fourth row is common here, because many births in this belt happen at hospitals in the capital. Full routing is on birth certificate name correction in Tripura, and you usually do not need us for it.

The order to do things in from Mohanpur

1

List every record first

Including the ones that disagree.

2

Settle the spelling

Before anything is sworn or printed.

3

Start board work

The slowest item, whatever your postcode.

4

Swear the affidavit

Locally, in person, before a notary.

5

Papers, then Delhi

Both notices together. We lodge the file.

6

Then use the capital

Passport and state offices, once the name is final.

What each step actually involves is on the name change process page, which this page does not repeat.

The affidavit, locally

An affidavit is sworn rather than filled in, so you appear before a notary in person and sign in front of them. Being close to the capital does not make this step optional or faster, and swearing it before you have settled the spelling is the commonest way to pay for it twice.

Take with you

  • Identity proof in your existing name
  • The exact old and new spellings, written down
  • Your address as you want it printed
  • Both parents, if the affidavit is for a child

Decide beforehand

  • The spelling you are keeping
  • How your father's or husband's name is written
  • Whether a surname is one word or two
  • The address you will still have next year

The format is on name change affidavit in Tripura.

The two newspapers

One Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, with identical wording in both. Arranged rather than travelled for, so proximity makes no difference here either.

Where the Gazette fits, from Mohanpur

This is the step where being twenty minutes from the capital buys you nothing at all. There is no Gazette counter in Agartala, in Mohanpur, or anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to one office in Delhi. Anybody in the capital offering to file a Central Gazette notice within the state is describing something that does not exist, though preparing papers and sending them to Delhi is legitimate work.

What goes into the file

A Central Gazette file is five papers and the Department accepts or returns it as a whole. Nothing is returned afterwards, so it is assembled once and assembled properly.

The five papers in a Central Gazette file
PaperWhat it must say or be
1. The affidavitOn non-judicial stamp paper, notarised in person, giving the old name, the new name, the address and the reason. The one step nobody can do online
2. Two newspaper pagesOne Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in Tripura, identical wording, and the complete original page of each with masthead and date. A cutting is refused
3. The CD certificateA declaration that the soft copy matches the hard copy, accepting responsibility for any mismatch. The most commonly forgotten paper in the file
4. The request letterAddressed to the Controller, Publication Department, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054
5. The proforma, in two copiesComputer typed, not handwritten, signed in the existing old name, with two witnesses giving signature, full name and full address

What the notice actually says

Change of name style

No. ADVT IV /

I, [existing name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Mohanpur, West Tripura, PIN], hitherto known as [existing name], have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as [new name].

[Signed in the existing old name]  •  Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address

Correction style, where a record carries a wrong version

No. ADVT IV /

PUBLIC NOTICE

It is for general information that I, [your full name], son of / daughter of [father's name], residing at [full address, Mohanpur, West Tripura, PIN], do hereby declare that my name has been wrongly written as [the wrong version, quoted exactly as printed] in my [name the record, with number and year], whereas my actual and correct name is [the correct version]. Both the said names refer to one and the same person, namely myself.

[Signature in your existing name]  •  Witness 1 and Witness 2, each with signature, full name and full address

Three details decide acceptance. A wrong version is quoted exactly as printed, spacing and punctuation included, and never tidied. Where several records carry it, each is named in turn with its own wrong version. And the proforma is computer typed in two copies, signed in the existing old name, with both witnesses giving a full address. Every variant is on the proforma format page.

The stages, and how it is filed from Mohanpur

Only one office in India accepts a personal name change file, the Department of Publication at Civil Lines, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, and there is no counter in Agartala or Mohanpur. Our Delhi head office lodges it in person. The local part stays in West Tripura: the affidavit sworn before a notary, and both newspaper notices booked together so the file is not waiting on one of them. The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid on BharatKosh only, non-refundable and revised each financial year, with our service charge always given as a separate line before anything is paid. Publication appears in Part IV commonly 30 to 45 days after filing, on a weekly release cycle, and the copy is a free PDF from egazette.gov.in that never expires and needs no attestation for use in India. The full route is on Gazette name change in Tripura.

Mohanpur and West Tripura, frequently asked questions

Where is my district office?+
Agartala. West Tripura's headquarters is the state capital, so unlike most of Tripura your district office and the seat of the state Government are the same place. That is a genuine advantage, but it touches fewer steps than people expect.
Does living near the capital make a name change faster?+
It makes the errands easier and the waiting no shorter. A board correction takes as long from Mohanpur as from the far north, and the Gazette takes commonly 30 to 45 days wherever you post it from. The two slowest parts of this job are immune to geography.
Is there a Gazette counter in Agartala?+
No, and there is none anywhere in Tripura. The file goes to a single office in Delhi, so this is the step where being twenty minutes from the capital buys you nothing at all. Anybody in the capital offering to file one within the state is describing something that does not exist.
What should I do before anything else?+
Two things, and both are decisions rather than errands. List every record where your name appears, including the ones that disagree, then choose the spelling you will keep for life and write it down. An afternoon on those two saves several trips later.
Why does the order matter so much here?+
Because when every trip feels cheap, nobody plans. In the far towns a wasted journey costs a day so people ask first. Near the capital the waste takes a different form: work done in the wrong order and then done again, which costs more than the trip ever did.
What is the commonest way to pay twice?+
Swearing the affidavit before settling the spelling. It is sworn in person and cannot be amended afterwards, so a change of mind means a second affidavit and a second fee. Updating Aadhaar before the Gazette is published causes the same kind of rework.
Did my district change in the 2012 reorganisation?+
No. West Tripura lost territory to the new Khowai and Sepahijala districts but kept its name and kept Agartala as its headquarters, so your documents say West Tripura whatever their age. There is nothing to explain at a counter on that point.
My relatives' papers say Khowai or Sepahijala.+
That happens if they are from those sides, because it is their district that was created in 2012 rather than yours changing. Their older papers say West Tripura and their newer ones do not, and neither version needs correcting.
The birth was at a hospital in Agartala.+
Then the correction usually belongs to the body covering that hospital rather than your own local office. This is common in this belt, and it is the step where being near the capital misleads people most, because a birth certificate is never a capital-office matter by default.
What must I do in person?+
Swear the affidavit. It is sworn rather than filled in, so you appear before a notary, sign in front of them and have it attested. Notaries are found around court areas, and this is the one part of a name change nobody can do for you.
Does it cost less here than in a remote district?+
Travel costs less, and nothing else does. The Government fee is the same, newspaper rates belong to the papers, certificate fees are set by the department, and notary charges are broadly similar across the state. The one cost that rises here is paying for a step twice.
Why does this page not list office addresses?+
Because locations, sitting days and requirements change, and a confident wrong address costs you a journey even when it is a short one. Ring the office before travelling. That habit prevents most wasted trips wherever you live.

Who wrote and checked this page

This page is written and maintained by the Tripura Name Change documentation desk under founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, who has 5+ years of direct filing experience with the Department of Publication in Delhi, with our Tripura office at Capital Complex in Agartala. That West Tripura retained its name and its headquarters at Agartala through the 2012 reorganisation is a matter of public record. Office locations, sitting days and requirements are set locally and change, so we have described where each step belongs rather than listing addresses that would date.
